legal exhaust
and exhaust that is not C.A.R.B Legal is "illegal" and is intended for off-road use.
Any exhaust that has a C.A.R.B certification is able to be used on the street.
The company that makes the exhaust or any parts should state wether it is C.A.R.B legal.
If you are really concerned about the law.
BTW did you need three threads?

All catbacks are technically legal. It's when you change the CATS that you can have issues, depending your states smog requirements.
Also - if the system is too loud, you can get a fix ticket as well.
Which systems are you looking at?

1+ to Rick.
Just make sure that the system you get is within the legal db limits & you're using stock cats/headers. Cats & headers are what give you problems with the cops, assuming the exhaust is not too loud.
I have the Fast Intentions exhaust; its not quiet, but its not too loud. In other words, perfect

OK - so further on this:
CARB legal or certification is a bunch of bogus junk for a catback. If your getting headers or CATS - you'd want either Carb certification or OBDII certified CATS - if you intend on passing smog tests.
There are a few sets of headers that are CARB certed and will pass in all 50 states...such as DC Sport, among others. Many CATS are also smog legal, depending on your state's requirements...some only require that you have them and that your car passes the sniff test.
And as SKATERBASIST stated - the real thing to look out for is volume. Too loud, and the cops will get you anyway - then you'll have to make it quieter, swap out for something else, etc. You also want to watch out for the smell - testpipes will pass all of the noxious gases through the tailpipes, cops and others can easily smell it - and they will pull you over and site you, if you have laws that are that strict.
So - to sum up - catbacks are fine, smog-wise - just watch for volume levels when combined with headers, cats etc. Testpipes, likely not and they will give themselves away from the smell. HFC's will not stink and give you the performance edge, but are likely illegal smog-wise in MANY states - so don't get caught with them. Headers - get CARB legal ones, if your state requires it.
Last advice - keep your stock exhaust and CATS - if you have to swap out the catback, better to spend $150 to swap it twice than many more hundreds buying something else. Keep your stock CATS - at smog time - you may want to swap them out for testing purposes.
Also - just for general FYI - when it comes to CATS/testpipes - they are specifically designed for off road use - so I don't condone, or practice for that matter myself
the use of them in any other way

BTW, if any company tells you they have an CARB eo number for their cat-back exhaust, they are full of it. Looking through CARB's database, I can't seem to find any eo numbers for aftermarket cat-back exhausts either. You guys are free to search for yourself - http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermk...es/amquery.php

So - it's not really illegal for a shop to install them, but a shop will get in trouble and fined if they let the car drive away.
