Yeah the guards help keep a lot of dust, dirt and debris from getting in the motor. As far as the motor getting hydrolocked from rain I doubt it because the heat from the motor would evaporate prior to it being able to cause any significant damage tot he engine.

I don't think it's so much that. The vent really isn't that close to the intake filter. Especially if you have a stock intake box, or even the Stillen one, you don't have much to worry about. Even with an exposed intake, such as the p/c, it would take more than a couple of drops of water to hydrolock the engine.
