Sorry to bring this post back from the dead, but does anyone know how difficult it is to remove the rearview mirror and take it apart to do the rattle repair with either foam, or double back tape? I had mine replaced by the dealer and the new one started rattling after a month and is driving me crazy!

I used the plastic strips, I just did it last week though. It's holding up fine now, but time will tell I guess.

I used the plastic strips today and it's a big improvement. There is still something going on inside the mirror as there are alot of loose parts there. For the most part it is quieter. I don't want to take the mirror apart and do the silicone thing, only to find out I have a quiet mirror that doesn't work my garage or dim at night!

I would love to see those pictures in case I need to proceed with that silicone project. Alot of noise can come from that mirror.

I took my mirror apart and stuck some paper tape to buffer the mirror from the housing. After 8 months, its been noise free. The only danger is you will probably get some marring on where you attempt to open it so do it on top since you can't see that part of the mirror.

I am having a different more annoying issue. I recently redid a whole a/v setup in my coupe and if I turn it up after about 5seconds I cant look into my rearview because its facing completely down lol. It's amazing because it requires a decent amount of force to fix its position and sure enough 5 seconds later its facing down again. I wish it would have a lock or something :/

What kind of paper tape are you referring to? Where exactly did you put it? Around the inside of the outer plastic trim on the front of the mirror?

I rolled up some paper tape (masking tape) to a certain thickness to buffer the housing and the mirror. I'm positive the mirror bouncing slightly off the plastic causes the annoying rattle and so I just rolled up some tape (paper) and made sure that all contact points against the housing, especially the outer plastic trim on the front of the mirror, was contacting tape instead of plastic.

I'm sure you could use a better material but as long as you make certain the mirror doesn't hit any plastic, the rattling will stop.

I couldn't see where to take the mirror apart...we're talking about the homelink mirror with auto-dimming right?

Yes. There is a thin plastic trim that goes around the front of mirror. You need to stick your finger nail or something in there at the top middle section and start trying to seperate it. Be careful if you use a thin screwdriver as it will leave a mark on the trim. Start at the top and work your way around.

I tried to take the mirror apart but after awhile I gave up for fear of snapping the front trim piece. Even with thin screw drivers, it is possible to mess up the plastic easily as it is quite soft. I started at the front top center to avoid any scratching. I really need to see those original pics in order to try this again. Obviously, this mirror is not made to come apart. Even if I manage to get it apart and repair the rattle, there is always a chance of screwing up something inside. I wish one of the guys with a success story lived nearby!
