uh, i know. that's why i said an open face would be fine. but again, just make sure it fits well. please see post #253 and the original post....again, an open face helmet is fine. i say this because it is cheap, which is what klubbheads wanted (as compared with the full face) and you would only face winds for a few seconds (as you both have already pointed out).

i was just commenting on your comment on why someone needed a helmet that was so fancy. remember, the fancy helmets are "fancy" for a reason...they last longer, are more comfortable (usually), and lighter (a HUGE advantage). but as you said, as long as it's rated within specs and standards, than it's fine.

For my purposes, I am looking for a M2005 helmet at the very least. I have seen some very nice helmets rated M2005. Obviously the SA2005 helmets are better and offer much more protection but I just can't see spending $150+ for just a few runs down the 1/4 mile. Thanks for the help fellas.

I never "commented on why someone needed a helmet that was so fancy"... I simply said, "who cares how fancy it is"... and for CASW Street Legals, really you don’t need anything fancy period.

I'm not here to bicker. And I fully agree that certain events would necessitate a nice helmet - just not as it pertains to this thread.

If (big IF) I get into the 13s with my measly AT sedan, I'll buy the cheapest helmet needed to comply with track rules.

Anyone that wants something more, so be it.

they're not necessarily better, just the requirement is different. a $600 arai is way more comfortable and much lighter than my pryotech. the difference is that the material inside an SA helmet is fire retardant where an M rated one is not because they figure you will be thrown from a bike anyway and not catch fire.

okay, you're right...i misquoted you. my bad. i'm not bickering with you though. the person who cares how fancy it is will ultimately be the person wearing it.

True, the SA rating does give you that extra protection with the fire retardant material in it. If I was going to be racing every weekend, I would definitely invest in one of those. I do plan on going a few times in 2008 but not enough to justify the extra money. The M2005 helmets are well within the requirements for me so that's what I'll probably end up getting. If I find a good deal on a SA2005, I may spend a bit more but from what I have seen, it's gonna be hard to find a good deal unless it's used.

Good find Peter! I didn’t look closely; does it meet CA Speedway requirements?

When are you coming out to the track again? We might be going to Irwindale next Thurs…

Minimum requirements are M2000 rated helmets. These are M2005 helmets so you are good to go with one of these.

are we certain M not SA?... I know they only care if its 2000 or newer, but the part I read only stated SNELL not M or SA... and since its auto sport I'm wondering if they will have a problem with motorcycle?... Do they even look for the tag?

snell is the foundation which actually sets the safety standards. since speedway is only concerned with meeting 2000, you should be able to use either. i wonder if you could use a harness racing helmet? it's the only other one that meets 2000. i haven't seen them actually check the tags though.

Positive. I got that right out of the rulebook. SA2000 or SA2005 is only mandatory if you are running 7.49 or quicker. That definitely doesn't apply to any of us. Besides that M2000 or M2005 is acceptable if you are running 13.99 or quicker. The flame retardant jacket rule only applies to those of us that are FI. It's a new rule. Any vehicle with a non-OEM turbo/twin turbo/supercharger/NOS must have at minimum a jacket that meets SFI Spec 3.2A/1 rating. If you are NA, this doesn't apply.
