Weird "clunk" noise from front brakes in my brand new G35x

Hey, i just bought a G35x about 2 weeks ago, and it is almost hitting the 500 miles mark. The ride is smooth and the acceleration is amazing.

But today, since it snowed a bit, my car acted kind of weird. I was cruising on the highway at around 60-70mph and my brother needed to make a pit stop. So i turned into a place and parked.

As always when I park, I apply the parking brakes and let go of the brake pedal. However, for this time, all of a sudden i heard a very sublte "clunk" from the the front wheel. I thought it was nothing and went back on the road.

At the stop light, at a complete stop, i decided to put full pressure into my brake, and release it, and i heard a VERY LOUD "cluck"....and felt it too. My brother describes it as knuckles knocking. Again, I can only replicate it when I am at a full stop and then applying full pressure to the brakes at standstill and then depressing it. For more info, the brakes does not squeal, or squeak. Also, no vibrations from the steering wheel at all from stopping when moving at any speed. When at reverse, there is absolutely no problems at all.

Since we were 5min away from the dealership, i took it in to let the techician check it. He drove it around with me for 5 mins.......and he could not replicate the syndrome, but it did make a slight "click" at times when he applied full pressure at a full stop. He told me it was due to the rain and snow, and it is the first time the car was driven under this weather condition.

I have not got it to "clunk" after i left the dealership. So what is the problem? Is it because there was debris in the wheel? I am quite worry and i hope it does not need new brakes....afterall..its barely hitting the 500miles mark!!! I have got it to "click" a few times using the same method, but it is at freezing temperature out there.

Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated it!

EDIT: i do not drive the car hard at all. I never apply the brake for any extreme stops. For the past two weeks, i have only done very very slow driving in it.

I've had this problem since I got the car, it still makes the clunk sound everything I come to a stop. The dealer told me its the brakes moving around.

When it's wet outside, mine does the same thing when I take my foot off the brakes in a complete stop.

I'm guessing it might be the pads sticking to the rotors? Because When i go out when it snows i get it when i start the car, so while coming out of the garage, i'll just mash the brakes going at around 5-10 mph and it usually gets rids of it. Mine Squeaks as well sometimes even without applying brake force.

Go figure....!

Hello....you have a new car, take it to the dealership maybe they can figure
out why you're driving 65/70 MPH in light snow! At this rate you won't have
to worry about a noise, just how to pay for all those hospital bills....

thanks for the reply guys.....i am hoping it is fine.

So i am guessing it only happens in the snow or rain?

I actually pick up my G35 in the rain, and never encountered this problem. For a car with a MSRP of 40K....a problem like this should not occur. My 8yr old Xterra i traded in never had this issue as well, but then again, it was a SUV with very different braking system.

it was light snow before......the highways were clear and well establish, just some drizzle/flakes....basically going at the same speed as everyone else, which is the speed limit. I am one of the slowest drivers of a G35 you will ever find, rarely ever above 3.5K rpm.

In addition, I did take it to the dealer...and they said it was normal.

kONartist: The dealer said it was moving disc brakes? did they have a solution for you? My dealer just told me to drive off.

Csquared: my car is NOT squeaking or squealing...which is kind of weird, but good at the same time.

Yarrh: Have you ever taken it to the dealer to find out the issue behind it? it does not seem normal to me.

They said thats just the way it is, when the breaks get hot they get smaller or something so they tend to move around.

No I haven't taken it to the dealer because it doesn't really concern me...I don't wanna get raped for a few hundred bucks anyhow.

I remember about a week ago I was able to reproduce this nuisance...

I took her on a 260mi trip in 10 degree weather cruising most of the time at ~80-90mph and then stopped at a coin-op wash around my destination to pressure wash my wheels and to get all the salt off the body. Needless to say, I was getting it again on the drive after the wash.

Again, I've only noticed this when it was wet out. I guess very cold water and hot brakes don't mix well.

BTW, it doesn't make a "very loud noise."

It's comparable to what cars with old wheels do when you very lightly ride the brakes while creeping the vehicle real slow...except this only happens with my G when I release the brake pedal from a hault to get it moving; NOT when I push it to come to a stop. Forgive me if you find this hard to read.

agree.....its not a loud noise....more of a physical "CLUNK" that you can hear!

but...today, i could not replicate it at all...and the car was as smooth as usual. So i think it is fine for now!

I have heard the exact sound, sounds like the pad is stuck to the rotor for an instant then releases. Has done it since day one. Slight clunk or pop and then rolls smoothly. I have noticed a drag or anything. For example stopping on an incline, release the brake… makes that noise and coasts smoothly. It not terribly loud or anything. I used my infrared thermometer to scan the rotors and there was not any notable difference between the driver and passenger side. I guess I should note the driver side is where the noise comes from. The noise is hit or miss.

yeah..its more of a sticky feeling. It only happens when the tires runs through a puddle of water on a sunny day, after a carwash, or in freezing weather............at least from my experience. It normally smooths itself out after a few minutes.

My friend's GS350 AWD does this all the time... in fact I remember my Camry and ES300 also doing a similar thing.... perfectly normal if I'm understanding you correctly.

For whgat it is worth, my new 08xs does this as well, and it is more pronounced in cold or inclement weather, but doesnt seem to have much bearing on the temp of the brakes (it can happen after my long stop and go commute, or right at startup, but doesnt happen every time).

I agree it feels like the pad is stuck to the rotor for a second.
