That is one disadvantage of having Cat converters. Most "blue smoke" is burned up by them and you don't see it. That's why you should have someone check the car, at start up, when it's DEAD COLD, before the cats can come up to temp and stop all the smoke. Today's cats come up to temp very quickly and most people don't notice the smoke that is really there, so you don't catch problems soon enough.

Yes, put the cats back on, take it to the dealer, (print out the TSB found on here) and see what they have to say.

I bought the car in January, it had two owners, 74k miles when I purchased it. I did my first oil change when it reached the 3k mark; used Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic. At the first thousand miles from doing the oil change I noticed my dipstick was half full, didn't take it as a big issue; refilled it to full. It has now reached 80k miles. 1200 miles ago it had it's second oil change since my ownership. It was a complementary oil change at the dealer (they used their own 5w-30 synthetic blend and oem filter).

So this morning I check my dipstick, it again reads half full at 1200 miles.

My question is, how severe is my oil consumption?

My car is under warranty until 2015, or 110k miles.

Wouldn't want the dealership to try and play me as fool, so any input is of help.

Might I add my car is a 2006 6 speed coupe.
try changing back to conventional oil and see if it helps

I know that sounded like a dumb question but I was told that once you switch to synthetic oil you shouldn't switch back.y buddy said to change the oil twice do it with synthetic then the next day change it again to conventional oil

Waste of money. Just drain it and re-fill.

My Son tried syn in his 2006 jeep. It burned a qt in less than 1000 miles (jeep was new at the time). He went back to conventional and hasn't had a problem since.

Many years ago I had a Honda 550-4 motorcycle (loved it) and it never leaked a drop until I put Amzoil in it. Then it leaked out of EVERY seam and gasket.

So I'm guessing some cars aren't designed for synthetic oil then.

Ok so switching back while I'm still in the first change shouldn't harm anything. If the consumption consists them take it down and start the consumption test ?

That's what I was hoping to be able to do but apparently Its looking like I won't be able to
Do so. If the oc issues continues after the flush then I know it's something else. Should I leave it completely as it is with md system on it art pipes and all ?

Take it down and start the consumption anyways. All you'll be out of pocket is an oil change either way around it.

Hmm...I would NOT pay Nissan or Infiniti for an oilchange prior to consumption testing because the tsb does not require one. Also, while my personal measurement said no good, theirs said OK. So either fight tooth and nail to have it done (which may not even correct the problem) or use mineral oil, higher viscosity 10w40 or even castrol 5W50 classic car viscosity or Rotella and just drive the heck out of the car that you bought. This is how I see it now that my car has made it to 76,000 mi and 7 years old. I noticed that by not driving so aggressively for daily commutes the consumption has been minimized.

U must've read a different tsb than me because the one I read said you must have the oil change prior to beginning the test and then take it in after 1000 miles for them to check it and order the short block if your oil consumption is out of range... Look back several pages in this thread for the updated TSB.
