Anyone change to a 4.083 gear?

Has anyone swapped out the stock gears from 3.538(?) to 4.083 in an '07+ G35 6MT?

It seems to be very popular for the 350z crowd... and most of them are actually doing it in older 'DE' cars w/ 7200 rpm modified redlines, and even some 6600 rpm stock redlines.

I think it would fit the HR motor's 7,500rpm redline very well, and would also get the extra weight of the G35 sedan moving much faster. With an ECU reflash and modest 500rpm increase to an 8,000rpm redline, the car would really move.

The 4.083 is also supposed to be an OEM Nissan truck part and under $500.

Wow that car with those gears would be an awesome 1/4 mile screamer But it would definitely affect high speed cruising negatively.

So what's involved? Can you just swap out rear Diff. housings, or do you need to swap the gears in the diff?

'07 350z guys are saying that 80mph in 6th gear = 3,250rpm.

I don't ever cruise 80, maybe 75 if there is no traffic, but usually 65-75.

This should keep the rpms around 3k.

Try driving on the highway in 5th gear instead of 6th and see if it bothers you, that would be an almost identical test to running the 4.083 in 6th on the highway.

I'd really love to do this and will start researching, but money is tight after the holidays, so at $430 for the part and maybe $50 for new bearings, the labor of probably $500 would make this a reasonably pricey project. But it should give the most seat of the pants feel out of any basic mod you do.... plus it's even a freakin' OEM part

I'm honestly not sure what all would need to be done. It sounds like the diff is opened up, the gears are changed and some pressed bearings are replaced just for peice of mind. It should be a pretty simple procedure that any shop familiar w/ changing rear end gears should be able to do.

Unfortunately I'm not too experienced here, so I'll be needing to go through an experienced shop to get this done if I decide to pursue it.

Seems like an ideal mod for the slightly heavier G35, and with the quietness of the Infiniti, 3,000rpm on the highway is nothing.

If changing to the 4.08:1 gear set I think you would be best to also install a good LSD in there while you were at it. You will need all the help you can get to put that added bottom end power to the ground.

Is the OEM Viscous Limited-Slip rear Differential (VLSD) not very good?

From what I have read you are better going to a Cusco or a Quaife unit in the rear diff.

You can still do it with out adding an aftermarket LSD. I would love to see what your times would be since you did 13.82 on the track before. Traction will be your only issue.

Yea, and honestly I think it would just be a great modification to do to enjoy daily driving. I can't think of how many times i've been in the middle of 2nd or 3rd gear and floored it and just been let down by the lackluster acceleration. I'd give up some 1st gear traction just to give the other gears some additional punch.

I've now read information that the ratio for the 2nd gen G35 sedan is 3.69 in the 6MT and the 5AT.

Does anyone know where I can confirm this?
