Cold vs TPMS

Anyone have their TPMS light on after a really cold night? It went to 4F Sunday and apparently the tires didn't much care for the cold as they were down to 25-28psi, enough to trigger the warning light. Its at the dealer for oil and the recall so I'm having it investigated as well.

Nope -- it was -5F here in Rochester yesterday (-22F w/ windchill), and I did not see any TPMS light on.

well if your tires are alredy low like 3-5 psi away from triggering the TPMSto go off, then when it gets cold the air in the tire will show less and set off the TPMS.

TPMS is unaffected by temp. Your tire's air pressure, however, is affected by temp. The hotter the air is, the more it expands therefore raising the psi in the tire.... opposite with the cold, the air compacts with cold temps, causing the psi to go down, so if your close to low already and it drops 30 degrees, it could very well take your air pressure below the limit setting off the light. this is also why the air pressure spec is always given 'cold', like 32 psi cold.

I understand air pressure. I suppose my real question would be, are the sensors looking for one sensor lower than the others or is at XXpsi triggers the light?

the sensors them selves have a certain PSI programed into them they dont compare the psi in one wheel to another, they each work independantly

Any individual sensor reading less than 28 PSI makes the light goes on.

Never had any issue on my 07 or the 08. I've only seen the low tire pressure warning once when I had nail in my tire on my 07. I check my tires once a week.

Right now it is 26 degrees and tomorrow will be around 35. It is cold here in Canada LOL But on the weekend it was around 0 or below a few.

Yes - I've had a sensor die on a very (for Houston) cold night. It stayed on even after the tires were at the right pressure, the dealer had to replace it. A couple of other members have had the same problem.

Search (am moving this to the Tech forum, where you'll find the other threads).
