I've been thinking about picking one up to peek under the hood of my F150, but I'm not sure what to get, price versus performance and all. And what about a good app for my phone/tab?

I use a BAFX OBD2 bluetooth dongle on my wife's Hyundai Santa Fe. Torque app on her phone. I've played with it on my G35 using NDSIII Lite app from Google Play store but haven't tried the Idle Air Volume Learn feature on the NDSIII Lite app yet but if it works I'll buy the regular version. Doing the Relearn "stomp" is a pain.
I use a ScanGauge II on my G35 on normally as I like the extra gauges and trip/fuel consumption/fuel state readouts. It will reset the check engine light and read out codes if any and I just google the code on my phone if needed. It's more accurate than my dashboard fuel gauge. (I need to clean my fuel gauge sensors again.)

 

Same here, BAFX adapter and Torque Pro. For the money it's by FAR the best bang for your buck since it supports full data logging which is very helpful. I also have NDS2 for some other things that Torque Pro doesn't support like the cam actuator duty cycle and the built in idle air reset is quicker than the pedal dance.

 

I went for the OBDlink LX scanner a few years ago. Currently about $50 on Amazon. It has had steady firmware updates and has its own OBDLink app. I found their app to be better than torque pro for what I typically use it for.
Nissan Data Scan (NDSI, II, or III) is awesome for idle volume learning alone, plus it displays parameters better for trouble shooting. For V35 cars, it works much better than torque because it uses the native Consult protocol vs the really slow OBD2 ISO standard.
TorquePro is a staple, but I don't really have a need for gauges.
I recently found the Carista app, it has some advanced diagnostics and let me change dealer only settings on my Lexus.
