What size for New Tires?

I'm purchasing new tires for my 2004 G sedan. I was thinking of going with 225/50/17 instead of the stock 215/55/17. Any thoughts on why I shouldn't do this?

many people have gone that route, or you can go with a 235/45/17 whatever floats your boat.

^+1 on the 235/45/17s. That's what I just put on and the handling is night and day.

If you go with 235-50-17, the overall diameter will be nearly the same. That way your speedometer will be, fairly, accurate.

OEM rims, 7", will fit up to 235/50/17 w/o problem according to Tire Rack.
even my wife CRV 6.5" rims have 225 on there.

Just curious if any of you guys notice a MPG drop with the wider tires than stock?

I haven't put larger tires on the G (yet), but basic physics would indicate a slight decrease do to rolling resistance. I do know goning from a 245 to 265 on my F150 caused about a 10 percent decrease, in mileage but I also went taller (speedometer adjusted).

I went with Goodyear Eagle F1-GSD3's in a 235/50/17 size - fit great, no sidewall "bulge", and speedo fairly accurate (49 MPH indicated vs. 50 MPH Radar).

Any other size on stock rim will cause a greater variance in speedo (and false actual MPG figure, since that's an inaccurate read as well).

Negligible (1 mpg or less avg ?) effect from increased rolling resistance (width), more than overcome by euphoria of great handling with these tires!

My $0.02

I'd trade 2-3 MPH off of my speedo for 45 series tires personally. Anyways I look at that 2-3 MPH as a "buffer" so I'm always going a tad slower than my speedo says.

What is the real difference between the 50 and 45 series for the 235/17? will the 45 series rub on the front? Does anyone have any pics to see the difference?

The only difference between the 45 vs 50 series is the ht of the side wall. This of course will have a slight effect on teh thread width, bu not really on teh over all width. If you go to teh tire rack website, they have a good expalnation on tire sizing.

Is there a benefit with going with the 45 over the 50?
