Ok to replace one rear tire?

Both of my rear tires have nails in them. The driver's side tire got pactched and is doing fine now. The one on the passenger side got a nail in the sidewall, but it was not losing air. The idiot at the tire shop went ahead and took the nail out anyway. Do I have to replace both rear tires or is there a less expensive solution?

i would say get both the rears for safety reasons.. patched tires are usually ok for a long time.. usually the remaining life of the tire itself.. but a puncture in the sidewall is iffy... no big-chain shop (i.e. discount tire, ntb, firestone, tiremax, etc) will repair a sidewall puncture unless you go to a really small non-chain shop that'll put a plug in it.. but then that isnt completely 100% safe either.. just from experience, i rode on a plug for at least 10k miles before and they say plugs last about a year possibly more.. but that was on a set of tires i had a long time ago.. i dont have those tires anymore

plugs are very inexpensive.. most small shops will charge maybe $5 to $10 max

sidewall punctures ARE NOT REPAIRABLE AT ALL .. PERIOD

if your tires are brand new .. then just get that one tire

but if rear tires are some what close to being needed .. then just get them and depending on your mileage .. i suggest a allignment

yea i dont recommend pluggin the sidewall either.. but just coming from past experience when i needed a quick affordable fix until i was able to afford a new set of tires.. thats what i did.. it worked okay for me for about 10k miles.. but i could of just been lucky... i don't think i'll ever do that again

For futre reference: according to tirerack.com, an alignment is usually not needed after you change two rear tires unless your car previously already needed one. They also said that it would be ok to replace one rear tire if the tread wear of the other tire was at least 5/32. Mine was 4/32, so I purchased Bridgestone Potenza Pole Positions.

I read up on a lot of the reviews on tirerack left by g35 drivers, and this was the best pick. If you want to save yourself hours of reading the reviews, just buy the pole positions and call it a day. Ironically, if I had listened to the rep to buy the pole positions, I would have saved myself a lot of time and stress.

btw, after a day or so of drive 70 mph on the highway, I learned that it is recommended that you drive 50 mph on the spare. haha. I even deflated the spare to 36 psi, because I didn't know that you're suppose to inflate it to 60 psi. I guess the sticker on the spare has some purpose.

Thanks for everyone that helped
