Opinions about plasti-dip and/or similar products

Hey guys my OEM wheels are a bit ate up so I'm considering plasti dipping them ( or a similar "peelable" product). I've heard varying results everywhere. What is the durability like? Do you have them? Did they come out good? How long have you had them? What product? Gloss or matte? Did you take your wheels off your vehicle or just mask everything off? Do you have to worry about it peeling while washing your vehicle?

Hate it, hate it, hate it. It will look ok for a week. It doesn't hold up well to sun. I did it on my 06 grand cherokee and I thought it looked good because I was 16. Would never put it on the G. Go the professional route and just get them painted or powder coated

Dont do it
It won't even look black after a few days (if your using black)
And if you dont spray it thick enough it won't peel off.

Just take them off ,wash then with soap and water using a red scotch bright
Dry them
Mask the tire and spray it with a trim black rattle can
Cheap easy and looks way better than plastic dip.. just go with matte it won't show all the flaws like gloss will

Agreed. Powder coating = some of the best money I've ever spent.

Depends on how much you want to spend to make them look better. I've used plasti dip with great results. Apply it thick enough (usually one car per rim) and I usually apply wax to them afterwards to give them a nice semi gloss look. This route would cost less than 50, powder coating starts at 500 I believe (least in my area) for the price I would just try to buy a used set of wheels

Guys, I'm kinda on a tight budget at the moment which is why I'm considering plastidip. It seems the average price for powder coating is $400-600 which is a bit much, at that point, I would just go buy some used ones, I didn't really want to wreck the original finish any more than it already is. Figured for 35 or so bucks I could have some okayish looking rims for maybe 6 months? Would that be a realistic expectation?

I should note that I live in Florida, not too far from Daytona, so what do you mean it doesn't hold up well to heat? I guess if anything it would expand and get saggy? but that shouldn't be the case if it was adhered correctly.

Not sure what your wheels look like now, but I'm sure they look better than plasti dip will after 6 months of use. I'm also in FL and can tell you the black fades with the sun. It's not like the whole wheel fades together either, it will be discoloration on some areas. No problems with adhering, but you'll get spots from pebbles and road debris hitting the wheels and be tempted to peel it off. Hope you don't need any tires mounted within 6 months
