Winter wheel & tire Packages??
How many of you are considering swapping off your stockers, or aftermarket wheels for a set of snow wheels & tires..or at least tires. Its not to early to start considering this. Everyone in the tire industry ordered their snow tires already, and have started to sell them!

Re: Winter wheel & tire Packages??
I am.
I bought some Blizzaks for my previous car in a -1 size, which is what I'm planning on doing with the G. The Blizzaks worked great for the first year, but after that they were just ok. They still had plenty of tread, but I suspect the super sticky top layer wore off, since we didn't have much snow that year. Are there any newer studless tires that last a little bit longer?
Let me know what kind of 17" package you can put together, with either steel wheels and hub caps, or maybe some cheapo alloys. I've also thought of picking up some 17" wheels from another Infiniti/Nissan owner that has upgraded.

Re: Winter wheel & tire Packages??
I would like to do this as well. But I need the cheapest option. I can't afford $1000 for winter tires. I may have to stick with the 18's and summer tires, and just hope it doesn't snow much. Throw some cheap options at us...

Obviously packages will be different for coupe & sedan. We have a ton of relatively cheap 17" whele options. Go to www.discounttiredirect.com plug in your car and take a look. Most likely you'd stay with 225/50 & 235/50 snows. Pilot Alpins.

Re: Winter wheel & tire Packages??
I am planning on purchasing a set of dedicated rims and snows for the '04 Sedan (6M) I have on order. I want to drop down to a 16 inch rim for the snows (makes sense in upstate NY -- LOTS of snow and potholes in the winter). It seems like not many tire manufacturers produce a winter tire with the same diameter as the stock 215/55/17s on the Sedan. I don't want to go any wider than 215 with all of the snow we get up here -- wide tires will ride up on the snow. I would need a 215/60/16 or a 205/65/16 to be within 1% on the speedo.
The only high performance snow that I've seen that is available in the 215/60/16 size is the Pirelli Winter 210 SnowSport. What I would really like to find would be the Goodyear Eagle Ultra-Grip GW-2 (or the newer GW-3) -- Consumer Reports rated the GW-2 the best winter performance tire. Any idea if they are / will be available in a size that works with the G35 Sedan? The Pirelli came in 3rd, but is more expensive.
Dunlop SP2 Winter Sport is also an option (#2), but the Michelin Arctin Alpin finished dead last (#6) in CRs testing with the comment "Best suited to areas where snow is less severe". That does not describe Rochester (120+ inches per season, not to mention various ice storms, etc).
Thanks!

Re: Winter wheel & tire Packages??
On my Maxima, I used Blizzaks. They are available in 225/50/17 in a V rated tire. (LM-22) They worked very well for the first two seasons (about 4 months on the car), a bit worse for the third, (and ready for the trash). These are soft tires, especially the outer surface of the tread. I live in New York, and we had plenty of opportunities to try them. Not bad on dry roads either....not quite the grip of the performance tire, but minimal extra noise. I see no reason to make your car look silly and put 16" wheels on it. If you want your car to handle the snow like a rally car, that's another story, but the trade-offs will be HUGE. Really narrow, studded, super-soft snows will completely remove dry road handling. The Blizzaks in 17 are a good trade-off. About $135 per tire, the last time I bought them. If you're skilled in snow driving, the limiting factor should be the front spoiler, not the 17" Blizzaks. Once the snow is deeper than about one inch over the spoiler, the car starts to snowplow, and the rear will get so light, traction will be a problem. But that should give you plenty of time to get the G back into the garage. Anything deeper than that, it's time for the 4X4.

Re: Winter wheel & tire Packages??
Turbofish - I'm curious what skins they are they puttting on '04 6MTs? My '03.5 inc'd Bridgestone Turanza EL42 - 215/55R17 a/s, a shitty side effect of wanting the heated seats and mirrors. I intended on using the stock rims for dedicated 17" snows but you are right about limited availability of decent, reasonably priced winter tires in this size at least. Hopefully something will come up before the snow flies...
Oh yeah - welcome to the Upstate 6MTs neighborhood (well, almost!).

Re: Winter wheel & tire Packages??
The OEM tires, and incidentally the ONLY tires available in 215/55R17, are:
Bridgestone Turanza EL42 (winter package gives you these -- all-season touring tire)
Goodyear Eagle RS-A (standard tire, I think -- all-season performance)
Goodyear Eagle GS-D (sport -packge, I think -- summer performance tire)
Compared to generally available tires on the market, these all suck. Jumping to a 235/50R17 will give you a few more tire choices without having to buy new rims, and the tire diameter is very, very close to stock.
225/50R17 and 225/55R17 also fit the stock rims, and aren't too far off on the diameter.. slight variance in speedometer/odometer.
For winter tires, good luck. Once of the side effects of living in SoCal is not knowing much about winter tires. The base-model sedan comes with 16" wheels and 206/65R16 tires, and 215/60R16 fits well, also. You may want to consider some cheap 16" steel wheels for winter duty as a way to get cheaper winter tires. You may also have to play with the tire dimensions a bit.. stay within 3% of the stock diameter, but find something just a hair off the default sizes that happens to be more common. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
