Sound fading from the left side of the car.
Hello,
I've been having some issues music/sound in my car. Every now and then the Highs will almost completely fade from the left side of the car, but the right side would remain playing. You can still hear the bass from the left side, but the voices goes down to a whisper. I noticed that this occurs when breaking or turning. At this point, i really don't think its the speakers, but i have no idea as to where i should start to diagnose the problem. Don't want to start pulling stuff apart blindly. Anyone out there have any suggestions? or has had this issue themselves? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry to say, but this is pretty common with our crappy stock systems --

And it's the exact reason I just finished replacing mine with an aftermarket deck.

If you list your budget and what's important in features - navigation, bluetooth, dvd, voice command, iPod, iPhone, Pandora, XM, Sirius, HD radio... - then we can start helping with recommendations.

Really don't have a budget. As far as features go, not to concerned with navi (car has one equipped), Pandora, xm, or hd radio. I Would like to have an unit with a touch screen, with either connections for a usb drive, or a hard drive (preferably a hard drive). Those are the main features i'm looking for. Thanks

"Really don't have a budget" Does that mean money's no object, or you're broke?
"Car has [navi] equipped" Stock navigation or a portable navi kept in the car?
Touchscreens are all but standard in the DDin range, as are USB connections.
I haven't seen a unit that can efficiently browse a very large hard drive of music, the only sane option is to go with an iPod classic (160gigs should cover all your music and enough videos to make it through any road trip). As most units can browse a large collection on an iPod due to interfacing with its built-in database.
With navigation out of the picture, I would put both the Pioneer 3200BT or 4200DVD as front runners. They're essentially the same unit, with minor hardware differences (screen, location of USB ports, built-in bluetooth) but have really good software for getting to all the music stored on your iPod.

There were a few with internal hard drives, but the enormous premium on them easily dwarfed the price of an iPod, and their capacity was similarly dwarfed by the capacity of an iPod. It also required decoders to be programmed/licensed, database systems built, and a lot of other overhead by the manufacturers instead of just following the specs for using the iPod's interface. With the iPod's ubiquity now, there's no reason for any manufacturer to try and do internal hard drives anymore.
Those that did exist, such as the Pioneer Avic Z1, Z2, and Z3 mostly just used the leftover capacity from the hard drives that stored the navigation data. A 20gig hard drive was less expensive than 4 gigs of flash memory in those days.
The environmental controls will be part of your new trim kit, either JDM or Metra. Check out my shopping list for more details on the difference and source for either one.
