Diy: Sticky For Window Motor Repairs/door Panel Removal
#121
I spent several hours taking the panel off my passenger door of my 2003 g35 coupe.... finally got the power window motor out, cleaned it, put it back in, no workie. I then replaced the entire unit with a new unit I bought online for around 160$, no workie.... I then checked both fuse panels (engine compartment near battery and drivers side under steering wheel) still no workie! I am out of energy for today... wow am I pissed off....
any ideas?

My driver's side window got stuck in the down position today at lunch. I tried to finish out the day at work but around 2:15 it started looking like rain. I headed home early and nearly made it before the downpour started. It figures.
Anyway, I just finished cleaning my driver's side motor and it's working again. I used brake cleaner to remove the carbon and some very fine grit sandpaper and a razor blade to refurb the armature contact area. It looked like brand new when I was done and it really wasn't that much work.
I love zero dollar repairs. Thanks for the write up!

Well as mentioned before, I did this fix and my window worked flawlessly (drivers side) for 2 months. Now its starting to act up again - is it possible that there was some excess carbon that may not have been cleaned initially preventing it from working? Or do I need a new motor at this point?

The brake cleaner I used did a fantastic job of removing every trace of carbon. Whether that was good for the motor itself, I don't know. I guess time will tell. If mine starts acting up in a couple of months, I'll try to remember to post here again.
If it were me, I'd try cleaning it again and test it before buttoning everything back up. If it doesn't work, it'll only cost you a little time, and swapping the motor for a new one won't be much more work.

Great job on the write-up!!! This helped me out a ton. I just wish i would have read further into the thread and saw that alot of you guys used brake cleaner and fine grit sand paper to get the buildup off of the contacts. Can't complain though it's my fault and the window works again but i think the motor is just had it.. I does go up and down but not very fast and sometimes just won't. Are there any differences between the oem window motor and one you can get at autozone???
