I kinda want to try this, but I would like to try using black and going over it with clear coat.

^You could if you really wanted to, but they do make the duplicolor in a gloss black as well as the matte black... I like the matte finish because it doesn't fingerprint nearly as much as gloss and has a very nice feel to it.

I actually went with matte clear coat. not like a car clear coat but an art one, krylon i think. turned out having a comparable finish (even though i sprayed it over like 5 layers of gloss clear coat)

^ good call. I didn't know you could get gloss in a spray can. The matte would look good too, especially since I want to do the trim around the gear shifter and that may be too much glossiness for me. I may have to try that. Thanks

^Yep. I used a matte clear coat on my grill.
I used a flat paint, but I wanted more protection from bugs, etc... so I added several layers of matte clear, sanding to keep it smooth.
I'm really happy with the end result:

No problem

Oh one more thing... matte clear is kinda hard to work with. You've got to do the entire part in one go so it's all 'wet' at once, otherwise the overspray will stick to the rest of it while it's drying and look terrible. Just don't go overboard or it will sag.

I only used a matte clear on the grill for durability, because I had to prime so I couldn't use the duplicolor stuff I used in the interior.
If you want a matte finish on the interior, the duplicolor vinyl coating is the way to go. It's about 1000x easier to work with.
