What's a fair cost for strut/shock replacement

My 05 G35x has about 114K on the speedo. Haven't replaced any suspension parts yet. I can tell that the ride is not as good as it used to be plus I get a bit of a thump from the front.

My local wrencher has quote me a price of $1200 to do everything. That also involves some of the smaller components like end links. This does not include the ever popular compression rod problem.

Anyone have an opinion on this?

Thanks,
George

the repairs are fairly easy to do your self with minimal tools, all but compression rod. For that you will need a press to get the old one out and new one in.
As far as the cost goes, you can get parts well under half of what was quoted to you.

you will also need to rent a spring compressor for the front struts or you can use a small rachet strap which is the way i do it

that too.

I forgot to mention it, perhaps it's because I did not need to use one when I did my shocks. For some reason my springs were not that compressed at all.

If you look at the picture below that is my old strut. As you can see when spring is installed there is only about half an inch of compression.

yea you can probably be able to do it like that but you risk messing up the threads on the top by pulling down on the spring while trying to put the hat on

Thank you all for your insights. And that $1200 price tag is for parts and labor and alignment.

No. Still deliberating. I'm not putting many miles on it right now so I'm backing off on the expense. The ride is not too bad considering I have 130K on the car with absolutely no suspension parts replaced yet.

George, you need to shop around and find an independent brake/alignment shop that will tell you exactly what parts are being replaced and why. For $1200 that should include shocks and every suspension part...well almost!
