Auto vs Manual 1/8 Mile Video (HD)

One of these days people will eventually learn that the 5AT in the G/Z isn't like their mother's ill-geared 4AT Honda Accord. It only looses 10whp/wtq to the 6MT. When you factor in the torque multiplication advantage of the torque converter and relatively tight gearing, it's not the blow out people think. Plus, I see that most 6MT owners flapping their lips have never been to the strip in their lives and would be lucky to probably run a 14.6.

^good thing I don't fall in that category. My wrong wheel drive Altima did 14.4 on a hot day with crappy street tires, and my 20s on the back, with my subwoofer system still bolted down in the trunk (didn't feel like unbolting it, its a royal PITA) As for my G, it is a 5spd auto, and It hasn't been to a track since 05. But for daily street use, the AT is great, it grips quickly to get the TQ to the ground, and the car accelerates very nicely. But my 6spd Altima does the same, just faster

^^^ I don’t think he's "angry"... I believe he's just trying to clear the air about misconceptions... MTs tend to have the mindset that they can walk an AT, then they are perplexed when they get beat by an AT...
Yes, the subject has been broached many times before, but newbies (and even veterans) sometimes need a refresher.

it all depends on the context as well. 1/8 mile? 1/4 mile? from a dig? from a roll? track?
im not saying anything is wrong with the AT, they are a marvel and the new technology of AT emerging are indeed able to faster than a MT. but the g35's aren't equipped with the top of the line technology. So it may in fact be very close in all of these situations but with a good driver the MT still can pull ahead, but not by much..

But in this thread, people make it seem (without directly saying it) that every AT will WALK every 6MT. When in reality, it all falls down to the driver.

I dont want to argue with you...but you are supercharged correct? That would explain as to why you have never EVER lost to a 6MT.
I am not saying there are not some decently quick 5AT's out there (there are), but when you are comparing a supercharged 5AT (your car) to a NA 6MT its not really apples to apples.
IMO, assuming all things being equal, if you have somebody that really knows how to work the gears then a 6MT will always pull out in the end.

exactly, it all depends on the 6mt driver in every race. it cant be generalized by people saying i never lose to ____. and plus all that gets reworked as soon as anyone mentions any performance mod.

I've never lost to a 6MT either, but my car isn't really that fast. It's more that I haven't ran into a quick one yet. I've taken a few 6MT and 5AT non rev-up 350z's and G35's. The closest I've come to an equal rev-up match is a run I did on a "private track" with an 06 auto... walked him by lengths (I have a video).
I can believe it if it was a crap track. It sounded like the 5AT spun a lot, and didn't really rev that high. 6MT's are def. great with some quality rubber and a decent driver. I'm just afraid of all of the 6MT horror stories I find!

Meaning that they have a tendancy to break, and that they are generally not very confidence inspiring to shift. I've driven manual G's/Z's, and the second gear synchro feels funny, even on brand new cars. I've heard of grinding as transmission age, noises, and other issues that ultimately lead to the early replacement of the transmission. That's just something that I do not want to deal with.
