now gotten a few squeaks when i try to crank up in the rain... seems like the weather here lately has loosened my belt..... as for those doing it by hand when tight enough you should only b able to turn the belt itself maybe straight up. a 1/4 turn.... will be hard to trun a 1/4 turn but thats how i can tell if tight enough for no squeaks.... going out now to retighten them....

 

i had to adjust mine a few days after i install my belts. not sure if it's the cold weather or not

 

wow, awesome write up. Seems like the hardest part is to remove the bottom engine splash guard and to determine the right tension for the belts. Will def. be using this when I change mines @ 60k.

 

it's a wonderful feeling after you complete the job and you realize that you save around $150. extra money to spend on the car

The past few days I have heard my belts making a little bit of noise. They've got 51k on 'em now (05 6mt Sedan)

I figured it's about time the belts have stretched to the point where an adjustment is required since the belts still look like they're in good condition.

I went to the stealer in the morning and one of the techs confirmed that indeed it was a belt tension issue that would be resolved by tightening the belts. They offered to tighten up the belts for me but when I asked them how they would confirm they had the right tension the tech said

"I'm just going to do it by feel. We're supposed to use a belt tension guage, but our shop doesn't have one, so we just do it by feel."

to which I declined their free adjustment.

My point is that it is really important to have the correct belt tension. I don't care how many years of experience you have, there is no substitute for a measurement performed by a precise tool.

To get the most life out of your belts and bearings, always check the deflection / tension accurately.

 

is this the same for an 06 g35c?

 

I'm pretty sure it should be the same, don't take my word for it though, check the service manual.

 

do i need different belts for underdrive pullies?

 

yes. ask the company, or refer to the install manual or website.

 

Is there a big difference b/w the Auto & Man. Belt Removal?

I changed mine last month. But when it's 30 or colder outside they make noise until the car warms up. Do you guys think I need to tighten or loosen the belts. Thanks

 

I just found this write-up 2 days after I did my belts on a ’04 Sedan. Nice write-up Sean. It’s exactly how I did mine…

I would add only one thing… When doing your belts also be cognizant of all the pulley’s when you get the belt off. Make sure they spin freely (except the crank of course). When I did mine I discovered that the idler pulley on the compressor side wasn’t operating correctly. It spun with friction and a slight grinding noise. Not good… The idler pulley on the alternator side spun beautifully as did the rest of the pulleys.

The part that really sucked was getting raped by the dealer for $90.00 for a new idler pulley. I had no choice since I needed to get her back on the road ASAP. You can order them online for half the dealer cost btw. Same with the belts.

 

I was told by the dealer if your belts make noise it's because they are not tight enough. (I'm not sure about the temperature, but when I changed mine it was about 40 outside) After you tighten them if you push down on them with your finger they should only defect about 3mm down.
When I changed mine it was somewhat difficult to get the right tension since the belts tend to stretch when new. So a few adjustments were needed. After that everything was good.
