Safe RPM limit

Safe RPM limit
I was wondering what a safe RPM limit is. I want to have fun with my car but I do not want to rag it out, rather take care of it. I have hit 5500 once, and usually go to 5000 if I am getting on it.
Thanks!

Re: Safe RPM limit
Safe for the car or you? For the car i am guessing. It all depends on your drivng habits. Anything except keeping it at the red line for LOOOOOOOOONNNNNGGGG periods at a time is considered safe. Bouncing it off the rev limiter everytime you drive, although relatively safe does not generally contribute to long term reliability.

Re: Safe RPM limit
I am unfamiliar with engines for the most part. Does the limit kick in in the "safe zone" or when you are already past that?
If I hit 5000 on every shift let's say, will that wear down the engine faster?

Re: Safe RPM limit
no, the limit will cut the engine at around 7500 rpm i think. I was slightly into the red once (but under 7000 rpm) and it didn't kick on. 5000 rpm wont hurt your car, it is engineered to be driven even higher.

Re: Safe RPM limit
Super. Do you know of any reference materials for me to read up on that talk about the engine being engineered to go that high and more? Like I said, I am new to understanding engines, just never spent much time at it. To me higher revs means closer to exploding :-)

Do some searches on www.howstuffworks.com. It's a great site. It may not answer your specific question but it will have a lot of general info on how engines work.

Re: Safe RPM limit
The G35C is a performance car at heart and is designed to be driven as such. This means you can safely run it high into the RPM range without any short term concerns. If you plan to keep the car for a few years, then you have no real concerns, enjoy the car, however if you plan to keep the car forever, you should be aware that the harder you run it now the sooner it will have problems later (transmission, clutch, brakes (harder accel usually means harder braking), even long term seal problems in the engine), of course I have a 98 Nissan Max that I run HARD often and it is running great on stock everything except tires and brakes after 110,000 miles.
