For atleast a day until they come out with something else!

I would recommend the pioneer - my friend has that same TV mounted on his wall (X-mas present form his wife)... picture looks awesome especially when he plays movies on his PS3 - 50" 1080P i think.

The 1080P is really for the blue-ray/HD DVD- movie junkies, it looks amazing but if you're just using it for HD TV broadcasts and normal DVD's - you will not see much of a difference between a 720P and 1080Ior 1080P set, especially once it is home in your room instead of in teh store next to the other TV's...

I went with a 42" Samsung 720P Plasma TV last X-mas and i am 100% satisfied with it - i considered the Sony Bravia 1080P (amazing TV) - but it wasn't worth the extra money to me for what i use the TV for...

i have to say im starting to agree. i started off as a 1080 bandwagon guy but with a viewing distance of 8-10' i cant really tell the difference between the 2. the colors on the pioneer just look so much better especially since i keep my house pretty dark. i plan on going to a couple different stores for more comparisons and ive spent the last 2-3 hrs reading up on avsforum.com. you definitely find people for all the brands out there so it really comes down to what you like best.

edit: cnet also has the 5080 reviewed higher than the 5084 although customers are about even.

Yeah I went through the same thing when I was shopping around for tvs. I think regardless of what you get, there's always gonna be that one tv that's a little better which makes things tough. I think between Samsung, Sony, Pioneer or Panasonic you really can't go too wrong though. Just make sure you calibrate it once you get it home and you'll be good to go.

Consumer Reports rates the Pioneer Plasma first and the Panasonic comes in a very close second and a lot cheaper.

We just got a 50" Panasonic where I work and the picture is amazing. For now I plan on getting the Panasonic when we buy a house.

The Panasonic has always scored number 1 or 2 in Consumer Report's Plasma Ratings.

Woady,

I agree with these guys and make sure you calibrate it. Also, for the first 100 hours you want to turn down the settings until your plasma breaks-in. Either you can pay to have someone calibrate it ($$) or use a calibration dvd. Or if you're lazy like me you can search on avsforums for the TV you have and try using other users settings.

btw, if the TV you want from best buy isnt on sale drop by the post office. there is a 10% off coupon in the change of address packets.

well 4 hours and 2 sore eyes later, i think ive decided...

50" pioneer kudo pdp-5080 720p will most likely be the tv i get if i decide to buy.

the 2 breaking points are that i keep my condo dark and i sit further than 8' from the tv. in a dark room, nothing beats the pioneer black although new samsungs and panasonics come close. also, since im not a hardcore home theater guy i will mostly be watching regular/hd tv and dvd's. at that distance, it will look just as good on 720p as 1080p. now if i ever feel the need to upgrade to blu-ray or hd-dvd, ill have a bada$$ bedroom tv lol.

FWIW, the only Samsung LCD I have has been giving me a lot of problems lately.. Not turning off/on, having to unplug it before playing my Wii or using an A/V cable.

Do you have room for a projector and screen?
I have to side with my good friend Sean Gilley here... The difference between 1080p with Blu Ray and a 720p HDTV is stunning. Additionally, lots of the 1080i sports broadcasting seems to look better on a 1080p HDTV than on a 720p HDTV.

I would get a smaller sized (cheaper) HDTV now with 1080p and maybe get a bigger set later on when you get your house. Put the small set in your computer room later on...

call me cheap, but id go to Wal Mart and scoop this up.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=5633687

its a 50" plasma with 10,000:1 contrast ratio and its under $1,500. Since your not looking for a full 1080P TV, this should do the trick, and you can save some cash.

pretty much as long as your HD, your going to appreciate the picture quality. i remmeber the first time i went SD to HD, and i was amazed. either way you can adjust the picture settings, and im sure your going to be satisfied too. good luck lyndon, let us know what u get.

Everyone's always talking about how good the Blacks look on different Plasma TVs... Why is how they look the gauge for how good a Plasma TV is?

I personally think people of all races look really good in HD.

For gods sake dont buy anything at circuit city or best buy. amazon, tiger direct, anything but those b+m's

For the record I have a Samsung plasma and it was the best looking TV on the wall. I can't stand LCD's, I mostly watch sports and the motion blur drives me nuts on a LCD.

Also, 1080P if the TV is 50" or bigger or at less than a 8 foot viewing range. Anything smaller than 50" 1080 is a waste of money because the human eye cannot detect the difference in the signals.

Agreed, but none of those internet retailers will give you 36 months interest free.
