If your cable box does not have HDMI... Take it back and get one that does have HDMI... It shouldn't cost you anything.
HDMI 1.3b is the latest cable spec.
If you get a cable with your TV, it will eliminate any problems with Best Buy should they arise. Sometimes you just want to get your stuff and get going...

Heck, you are single with time on your hands. You can rent blu-ray and PS3 stuff from Blockbuster and you have instant entertainment. Besides, when you move into your new home (whenever that is), technology will have changed some, prices dropped, and you can then buy a mack-daddy 50"+ plasma for your living room and move this set-up to your bedroom...
Seriously, my parents have Bravias and the sony blu-ray (along with a custom $20k audio install) in their house and I have the LCheapo $3k set-up and my dad shakes his head and sits in amazement that he spent so much money for a negligible difference...
too late lol. bought the plasma, stand and cable today. found out they had 2 in stock and couldnt say no. waiting on my buddy to pick me up so we can go get it. also got comcast hd/dvr for $14 extra/mth. i get $150 gift card and another $40 or so from best buy so ill use that all towards a blu-ray player sometime. i figure ill give it a couple weeks but ill probably end up with an 80gig ps3.
jb/others - what do i need to know about a ps3? ill need a hdmi cable for it too right? also saw sony makes a remote for it for watching dvd's. does the size of the hd matter? how do i "attain" movies for it? update software? etc. thanks in advance!

congrats and post pics of your set up!!!
i dont know if this is your first HD TV...but when you see the HD channels, you will be blown away if you coming from regular SD.
when i got my PS3, it came with an HDMI cable (i think unless my brother bought it at the same time?) but pretty much the HDMI cable carries both video AND audio (plus giving the best of both compared to component/composite).
either way man im happy for you. i love when people go HD hahah, i just got my GFs family go switch, and now they got like 4 HD tvs (they are all Vizios) but hey when im over there, i wanna see my shows in HD damnit!

As far as the ps3 and hook up question.... it depends on if you're sending directly to your tv or to a surround sound system. If its directly to tv then you'll just need one hdmi cable for the ps3 since it carries sound and video (as Black_G35_Coupe stated). IF you're sending to a surround sound receiver it all depends on if it has HDMI and if those HDMI inputs accept both sound and video (my onkyo receiver only accepts video so i had to send sound through the optical output on the PS3).
As far as cable boxes make sure that it will reliably work over HDMI. I have verizon FIOS and although the box has HDMI output, it tends to freeze up when I use the HDMI output. I've traded in 2 boxes and had the problem with all three. It wasn't until the 3rd tech that came out that I found out that their boxes don't reliably sync with all tv's (at least he was honest about it).
As far as the PS3, it should automatically ask to update the firmware when you start it up. Just plug it into your network and download and install the latest firmware. As I posted earlier if you get the PS3 and can't find any deals go to the link I posted and sign up and pay for it with the Sony credit card. You'll get $100 off on your first purchase as well as 5000 points which you can also use towards paying off your balance ( i think it adds up to another $25 or something like that). Also make sure that you change the video settings to 1080p (i think by default it will output a normal SD signal and not look as good).
Also if you DO have a receiver that excepts HDMI inputs and an HDMI output you can run everything to the receiver and then feed it to the TV. The nice thing about this setup is you dont have to worry about changing the video input on you tv (video1, video2, etc) AND changing the audio input on your receiver. You would only have to change the input on the receiver and not have to deal with the tv remote at all (definitely makes things easier when you have 3+ inputs to deal with).

got hosed AGAIN. box was too tall for chris' tahoe lol. so today im going with my co-workers f150 and getting that biotch. stand will still be on sunday so ill use my old stand. ill take pics sunday when i get it all.
as far as hookups, ill be running hdmi from my new comcast hd/dvr box to tv for video. sound will probably be component from my old 5.1 system. if i get the ps3, it will probably be hdmi for video. im guessing i will have to do component or something a little older for sound from the ps3 as well.

You want to hook all your devices (cable box, PS3, etc.) up with HDMI if possible. It gives the best picture and it also is the easiest with sound and video combined in one cable.
Sony makes a bluetooth remote for about $24. It's a lot nicer than using the game remote to watch DVDs. I bought one and am glad I did.
You'll need an HDMI cable for the PS3, too. The best HDMI cables for a Playstation are version 1.3b. This will pass the best colors and sound. HDMI is an odd protocol, but the cables matter. Ant HDMI cable will work, so don't fret if you aren't into all the different specs and stuff.
The PS3 hard drive is only useful for games. If you think you're going to play a lot of games, get the bigger hard drive. Unfortunately, there aren't currently a lot of games for the PS3. Good thing it plays movies excellently!
If you upgrade to the latest v2.10 firmware (you should do this sometime) you'll be able to watch and DVD, DivX, or XviD files on the PS3. This gives you the usual options for "attaining" movies. As far as genuine Blu Ray movies, I think you have to actually buy the BR disks at a store. That's the reason HDMI has better, digital picture quality... Only HDMI can have digital playback per the rules.
