I pulled my car out of the garage this weekend for a few hours and then moved it back. The next morning it smoked a small amount at startup and a clicking noise came from the engine for a few seconds. This morning I checked the oil and it was fine, startup was good (no smoke or noise), oil level was close to the high mark. I'm at 5k on my current synth, so it appears I'm not burning oil. Mileage is at 66k. Any other ideas?

Usually when a little smoke (blue) comes out on start-up from sitting for awhile, that means some oil seeped into combustion chambers from valve guide seals. If white smoke, coolant seeped in c/c's from head gasket.

Ticking for a few seconds, valve-train noise and/or hydraulic lifters until oil got pumped there to lubricate. All I can think of from your descipt.

Very little OC looking at stick and 5K on oil, good deal. Your VQ is a non-revup DE longblock b/c yours is an 5AT.

Wow mine just did this too, except sounded like a lawn mower and quite a bit of blue/white smoke. Oil level was only down 2/3 qts on stick when I checked before starting.

Little over ~15K miles on my TSB revup VQ replacement and now this. Going to video next time after sitting for a few days with next start-up. If the same, off to the Dealer I go with proof of this condition. Here I go again with another bad VQ.....

You lost the motor when you went below ONE quart down.

 

Okay, I am totally becoming OCD about checking my VQ's oil regularly, but it is furiously hard to get consistent results. The manual says to let the engine cool at least 30 minutes. Is that the standard for the most accurate results, and what the dealership uses? Right now, I'm reading 5mm low after cooling 30 minutes, and 10 mm after 2.5 hours. Which reading is more accurate?

 

2/3rds (two thirds) of of quart down. Not 2 or 3 quarts down. I was only 16mm down on stick per TSB lingo.

 

Wooo! You scared me... That's much better. Running a motor just two qts low can really damage it. You lose cooling and the oil's additives break down much quicker.

Agree running VQ that low is not good for those exact reasons you mentioned.

I'm still in disbelief what mine did. Really thought I was going to be done with this crap and finally start enjoying my G35 with this TSB replaced VQ and somewhat acceptable OC in my book.

 

66666 miles.... oil consuming motor.. gettin a new motor on january 5th.. warrantied at riverside infiniti..!!!

 

I just bought an 05 g35 coupe with 30k mileage on it...I hope i dont run into this problem.

 

Well, my 05 coupe with manual trans has just over 42,000 miles. My last oil used was Castrol 0W-30 at just over 4,000 miles. I usually go at least 5,000 between changes. At 2,000 it seemed to be like all my other changes. Now the dipstick is close to the bottom which is the most she's ever used on one change. Should I try topping it off or just changing the oil? I guess VQ motors go through German Castrol like gatorade lol. Aside from consumption it has to be good for startups during winter.

 

^You could top it off or go to dealer and start testing. Dealer will probably want to begining testing with a fresh oil change anyway, if they weren't the ones who did your oil service last.
