Lots of good info in this thread.
Personally, I'd be getting some beater with a 5/6spd for my kid to learn on. I think if they learn to drive on a manual car, they'll ultimately be a better/more attentive driver later on. Driving a manual requires a bit more skill and coordination than simply stepping on the throttle, brakes and turning a wheel. Also engage the kid in doing some of the easier repairs (oil changes, tire rotations, etc).
FWIW, I was 21 when I brought home my first motorcycle. The parents damn near threw me out. The following year I lowsided, but walked away with no damage to the bike or myself. Fast forward nearly 2 decades without incident until I got rear ended this season while stopped at a light.

I got my G35 coupe when i was 17,
The only difference between your son and me when i was 17 is that
1. I payed for all the maintenance
2. I payed for gas
3. I payed for the insurance
I think its fine for a father to get his son a nice car but if he can do all these things, then im sure he'll appreciate it more. I work at an auto shop and i cant even begin to count how many spoiled kids come in with their BMWs and benz and so on and treat them like **** and just charge it to mommy and daddies credit card. Shame "/
I cant really trust your word on him being a "GOOD DRIVER" honestly i punched the hell out of my G and drove fast, i think its a little hasty for you to say hes a good driver at his age when you're about to give him a sports car.

Geez, all you guys got G's when yall were young gunz..... i got mine when i was 20 and had to pay for it myself, im 21 now.
as far as OP goes, dont get your son a g35/37 for the first car. daily beater is great, something easy to mod and maintain, and wont be at a total loss when Timmy drives it through your neighbors fence one night home from a party. just my opinion.

when i was 17 i was already on my 4th car. the first 3 were vw's. i talked my parents into letting me buy a second gen rx7 turbo.....bad idea. had the car a few months and started modding it right away. needless to say car went bye bye when i lost my license for racing my buddies older m3... the g35 is by no means a monster power wise but it is quick and lets face it speed and 17 year old young men dont mix. yaeh there is the exception to the rule but maybe like others have suggested, a late model honduh or vdub might be a safer bet.

i dont why everyone saying no dont get him one as if they are still expensive cars, the Gs dropped down quite a bit in price and they are no different than buying a newer civic, accord, grand prix, etc...
If its in the price range and he likes it why not, gotta keep in mind few things. Its a sport car, and people *think* they are expensive, so expect him to get pulled over few times, and also few speeding tickets here and there and maybe some stunting.
when i was 17 in 2005 i bought a 2003 GTP limtied edition with less than 15k miles on it and the price was way more than the G coupes nowadays, i dont see it as a big deal

I'm 16 and i got mine a week ago he will really like it. if you do get it, make sure you get the color he wants. I waited an extra 2 months longer than i wanted, and i got an amazing used one with some extras, so be patient. The only problem that make concern you is that they are front heavy and can fishtail. My brother drove mine and fishtailed it (but he was going too fast ).
