I have the full FI setup and as good as this system is, it does drone a bit in those lower revs you referenced. So, unless you really can't stand the drone, I'd keep the Tanabe, get a true COI, and have her tuned.
It’s not that bad but you are right about a tune.
Have to do that . Had talked to Joe about it before, just haven’t followed through yet.
Been a while since I’ve posted about the progress on the coupe rebuild. top end done, about to start making progress on the timing cover and chains next week.
decided to use these Amazon valve covers. They’ve improved a bunch since their first iteration with the bad screws and castings.
Hoping the timing goes well, but this looks like it’s going to a very time consuming and tedious process.
Nice update and good info on the valve covers. Also is that Saab Sonnett III? I think I got that one but can't figure out the other car in your previous pics.
The timing stuff is actually really straightforward, line up the colored links with the dots on the gears.
Timing chains and belts have come a long way since the "disasterous 90's" when there were no indicators and you used a combination of magic + intuition+ luck to get it back together.
Ran over a chunk of a 4x4 piece of wood today, my road clearance under my car is 3.25 inches, a 4x4 is 3.5 inches.
Definitely felt that one in the cabin, I thought it was a small cardboard box in the road until I was literally 0.0001 seconds from running over it and my butt puckered and I was like FFFFFFFUUUUUUUKKKKK!!!!!
Drove straight to the shop (like 2 minutes away from where I was), got lucky, no hole in my oil pan but my engine crossmember has a nice gouge in it. Next oil change I'll be using a little prybar to dig out all the wood that's embedded in it right next to the service jack location.
Not today … but last I worked on it … got everything ready to start timing. Cams in, VVT intake solenoids on. Now just need to set the rear cover and start the timing process finally.

oh jeez, hope your car's ok!
reminds me of when i drove over one of these on the highway in my G... that thing is probably what ripped off a large chunk of the under engine splash shield
I've been focusing on my Lexus lately after giving the G to my daughter. Of course she wants to take it to the track, so we spent last week going over it to make sure it was worthy.
Flushed brake fluid and clutch fluid, changed oil. Pads are okay but I ordered another set to have on hand just in case. I did notice she hit a curb or something and bent a front sway bar bracket. Got new Hotchkis bushings to install while we have it apart. Car is in pretty good shape for 311k miles.
Valve cover gaskets are starting to leak. The AC compressor likes to shred belts lately, and finally a partially ripped belt cut a AC line, so a full AC system replacement will be the next project before it gets too hot around here.
sent my clutch in to get re-padded last week. Got a tracking update Sunday that “my box was destroyed and all contents were lost, box was discarded.” So that’s … great … 😭.
I will have to buy a new disc. Not sure if spec sells that “vintage” single disc anymore, so we’ll see what I have to do.

This is why I have skid plates protecting the sump on both of my cars. Priceless insurance.
Been putting off changing my brake pads for the past few weeks. But about 2 days ago it started sounding real bad….so I knew I needed new brakes ASAP!!!
Buying some new tires soon, new set up is looking like 225/40/19 up front and 255/40/19 in the rear. Might do a 20 mm spacer up front for fitment if i dont buy 245/40/19 tires. im also running 06 headlights and 06 OEM 19" Rays.might drop it about 1"
