Tiptronic help!!!

This has happened twice this week as well as a while back. When I go from drive to tiptronic mode, the instrument panel still shows the car in "D". Even if I shift up or down it still shows "D". Only when I restart the car does the problem goes away. I am over 70,xxx miles now! I hope this is not a problem starting to emerge. Any thoughts?

He is out of warranty unless he got an extended one that goes past 70k miles

OP: you can still shift in manu-matic mode, though? Even when the display shows "D"? Sounds like a wire got loose or went bad in the shifter hookup. there was a DIY here to reverse the shifting (pull to shift up instead of push) and that DIY page had pretty good info on what wire did what. It was either that DIY or a thread related to it. Try looking for that, and you might have a better idea on what to do. You could also try asking some of the wiring guys here.

you need to take it to the dealer and see what they say, it might be just electronic issue, i wouldnt take anywhere else since it sounds like something small, and if the mechanic has no idea what da hell they are doing then they might make something small into a big issue

i hope you guys arent changing from auto --to--> autoshift while moving the car. not that the car cant do it but it'd probably be better to do it while stopped.

just a question, but when the car is moving and you switch from auto to manumatic, does the car shift down to 4th if you're in 5th @ the time?

No, I was parked and then switched to MM. I did not notice that it still showed "D" until I started shifting. I guess this is not a problem that has been heard of before. I did not get an extended warranty.

I know I was answering someone else who was saying theirs switched to 4th from 5th. For your problem, I have never heard of something like that and you should have it checked out.
