Service Engine Soon Light...gas cap not clicked!

The other night a "service engine soon" light came on and scarred me because I figured theres another 2k down the drain for somethin. I popped my navi and after 8 screens of scrolling it told me this basically:

Theres a problem with the exhaust system, take the care to the infiniti dealership as soon as possible. Do not accelerate hard or go up any inclines and call roadside for help. Lastly it says, your gas cap may not be on or open, check and the light may go away.

I go and check and click the gas cap a few more times, finally the light went away the next morning.

Anyone else have this happen? I'd be screwed if I didnt have the nav tell me. The best question was how much would of it cost at the dealership for them to tell me gas cap was loose? (my bumper to bumper is expired)

Depends on the dealership.....take it to a Nissan dealer. There rates aren't as high as Infiniti, and when I worked at the Nissan dealer we wouldn't charge you if no work was done, ie loose gas cap diag was free.....also you can take it to an Autozone and get free ecu scans, and if it comes back Gross Evap Leak Large it's the gas cap 99% of the time. I think the code was 0490??

I had this happen to me too. I took it to the dealership and they showed me that I didn't click the gascap on tight enough.

Get a Scangauge II. I have one and it's pretty neat. It won't offer you the wealth of flexibility and stuff that you would get with the Autoingenuity software, but it does pull information such as intake air temperature, coolant temperature, Engine RPM, Vehicle Speed(can also be adjusted to account for changes in tire size from stock tires), Real Time fuel Economy, Open/Closed Loop, Miles Till Empty, Gallons Used/In Tank, Voltage, Engine Load, Throttle Position, Ignition Timing, current HP utilization based on Gross HP Engine rating, etc as well as typical trip-based statistics such as miles traveled, amount of fuel used, average speed, peak RPM, average fuel economy...etc. etc. You can also use it to pull trouble codes and turn off the Check Engine Light.

I use mine in my Tacoma mostly and leave it in the truck as a permanant fixture for displaying real-time diagnostics and vehicle dynamics and it's really sweet considering it only costs $160 shipped. The interface isn't as pretty as those expensive $400 units, but it does offer a lot of functional useability for the price and the fact that it comes with everything you need(the gauge itself with the software preprogrammed in it, and an OBDII cable).... whereas if you buy a software package that needs to be installed on your Laptop, you will always have to carry your laptop with you in your car in order to use it.... and that can take up quite a bit of space and the risk of theft becomes a much greater reality due to the value of a laptop vs that of a small dedicated piece of hardware like a Scangauge

Scangauge main site:

Place to buy it for $159:

$95.00

It costs $95.00 dollars at a Hyundai dealer i Pensacola florida. You would think as a courtesy the service guy at thed desk would just say, "did you check your gas cap?"

Those things that stop your cars are not "Breaks" but BRAKES!

I've been advising members for years not to go near the Infiniti stealerships, Nissan charges 30% less and their mechanics are generally better trained! Infiniti s/b only used for warranty work! Locating independent Nissan shop/mechanic will keep from draining your wallets too! All these issues with your gas caps, take the time to listen for the click when reinstalling...not exactly rocket science!
