do these cars really need the premium gas or can we put midgrade in them??
I myself would use mid grade from time to time and never noticed any problems. However, joining this forum and reading up about the G35 makes me put the better gas in her. I still can get the premium for $4.10 at a Kroger's gas station with my Kroger card and I don't even cry about that cause I see a lot of you people have it a lot worse then I do when it comes to the gas.
It's always a lose lose situation when you use 87. You get less mileage to the gallon so you aren't saving any money and the car will need maintenance more frequently. I have never understand people not using the REQUIRED gas.
Hey All- Great thread, since this effects every one of us no matter where we live. We love our G's. Our G's deserve only the very best! Do your homework, find the lowest price gas location and feel better (because at least you tried to save some cash).
You can use Google Maps (Gas Buddy) to find the best deals in your area or anywhere along the way from point A to point B!

If you are glued to your BlackBerry like I am, there's a killer app called GetMobio (especially useful if you have GPS like the Curve 8310).

If anything, buying cheaper gas can be thought of as a protest against hi prices. But if a lower grade gets you less MPG, it defeats the purpose of buying cheap.
If u lease the car, then u don't care about long term damage lol
I can barely get 400 a tank doing boston to nyc and back, using tip and no slow traffic...

Buying 87 would most likely affect gas mileage. But I don't even care anymore, it's $4.50 a gallon here, so saving $.30 to put 'cheap' gas in it doesn't even matter. It's ridiculous no matter how you look at it. Just drive it easy and you'll save gas.
yeh the gas price gouging hurts and now I dont really rev her much over 2.5krpms (usually around 2k) and i let her drift(throw it in neutral) when I'm getting ready to stop. just by doing that i've been able to maintain 17-20mpg driving in the city give or take. there's ways around it but it definitely hurts. go big or go home, my baby is getting 93, until it hits 5 a gallon. then i will be riding the iron horse aka the bus lol
For those that keep saying lower octane results in worse mgp therefore it’s not worth the savings… I’m not sure that’s altogether true.
I cant speak for a stock programmed ECU – but with Osiris I have an “econo” tune that I have tested with 91 octane and indeed it gets better mpg than the more aggressive maps I have… granted I haven’t run it with 87 or 89 (87 &89 have never been in my car), but the tune was made on that map specifically for lower octane fuel (in the event that it is ever desired).
So considering that I can run 87 on an econo map – and that map has already proven better mpg… I don’t know why lower octane on the stock ECU would be any different… This is pertaining to 1st gen sedans that do not state “premium fuel only”.
Has anyone actually calculated mpg with lower octane fuel? Or are the multiple posts about lower octane being worse mpg just theory? I suspect its not fact based on testing.

lower grad fuel is harmfull to our cars, if you do it once or twice then its fine, but constent, it will knock. our cars were designed to take premium fuel(in vancouver, 91 minimum.) any lower and your actually reducing your mpg and hp. it has been tested (unofficially, by my friend who thought he could save money, LOL)
I just heard on the news that usage of premium fuel is down 20%. I'm sure there are numerous owners of cars requiring premium fuel changing to mid grade. I'm using the 89 octane all the time with no pinging, or loss of power under moderate acceleration. My gas mileage is the same as well.
yah dont make the same mistake my sister did....she owned my car before me and is the reason my trans is messed up...she never put premium on a
1.8T....I am pretty sure a 3.5 will be much worse....
