QOTD: Have You Tracked Your Car?
QOTD: Have You Tracked Your Car?
I'm very interested in testing out my car on the track, but I also am a bit hesitant to beat the crap out of it seeing as its also a daily driver.
My question is, how many of you have brought your daily driver to the track and beaten it down? Did you have any failures? Anything break? Etc

I've taken it twice and will do so again in 2 weeks. no 'failures' unless you call excessive tire and brake wear 'failures', lol. did great for a bone stock car (07 g35 coupe 6mt). I'm talking about a road course, not drags)
(edit: I did get brake fade at the end of my 25 minute sessions but I am also a very late and hard braker.)

My car has been to Sebring 5 times. If you are driving with the mindset of you have to drive the car home you should be fine. I have had no problems.

Did you buy a decal with numbers on it? and the front tow point thats covered up by that plastic piece, can that be easily removed and subsequently replaced? btw you G looks good on the track!
this car loves the track, just keep your brake pads fresh and frequently bleed your brake and clutch fluid, keep power steering fresh, oil, etc. think about getting race tires/wheels..no problems here yet.
i called around to local sign companies to find two large magnetic sheets and black vinyl...cut out the numbers...and made my own permanent number decals.
Yes the toe hook cover is easily removed but most events don't require you to have your hook installed. I double and tripled read the requirements before my first event and went a bit overboard. Now, I still install it with the thinking...if I do...I won't ever need it. There are a bunch of Z drivers that track their cars if you want to check out my350z.com and a few G drivers. You will hear a lot of get this and that, but as a beginner or a very occational driver like myself you can have a blast with a stock car...(edit..not directed at you smoovarrowhead, we must have been posting at the same time) Just make sure your pads have at least 50% life left, you have fresh brake fluid, and if you feel any fade take it easy for a few corners. There is no price for first place...only driving home in your car. I almost ended in the wall during my fifth visit. I will post in a sec
November will be my first time with my Nismo suspension that I installed over a year ago.
Thanks for the compliment.
If you feel like reading my old posts from my second and first experiences at Sebring with some old videos that should work click on my old thread

If you look closely you can see the slots in the rotors...cool

But I give fair warning...new and improved brakes may cause an inflated level of confidence and oversteer!!! Over-correction into second stage of a tank slapper.

Here I am finally thinking...OH ****!

OH...IT TURNED
Back to steering so I don't hit the wall with the rear of my car instead of the front.

HAAA....Anyway...The car was fine and only mildly wet my pants

My track day in November 07 was an absolute blast. The new brakes felt AWESOME. The initial bite was incredible compared to my old set up...which as stated before was only Hawk HPS pads and rubber lines so there should have been a big difference. I was able to brake later and harder with confidence. I still noticed a little fade, but it took longer to show up and was not as dramatic as with the HPS pads. I am not one to push my brakes after noticing any fade so I won't ever be the person saying I burned a set of pads in just one day. I am also still in the early stages of doing track days as this was my fifth event in 2.5 years. All this being said, any fade I did experience eased by just taking a couple of corners easy or a slow trip through the pits and heading back out. Recovery time was much less than what I ever previously experienced. My last session of the day was 45 minutes with just me in the car...my friend/passenger was just watching...and I never felt uncomfortable about the condition of my brakes. The track was pretty clear and I felt I was pushing the car pretty good. These Nismo pads are still no dedicated track only pad, but I have a good amount of front pad left without any noticable pad deposit on the rotors. I did observe pad deposit on my original Brembo rotors with the HPS pads...though it never turned into the throbbing pedal "warped" rotor situation. I am happy with my new setup and would definitely do another track day with the Nismo pads. I am also very happy with the rotors and ss lines. Cold initial bite is still good even after the track day and there is no pulsation in the pedal, no squealing... nothing but strong braking. The brakes are easy to modulate and the brake pedal travel is less than what I remembered before doing the upgrade. After installing the HPS pads during my last brake maintenance I wish I had stayed with the OEM pads. This time there is absolutely no regrets.
Oh yes...and since the Project Mu rotors are basically black chromed or whatever that treatment is called and the rears are painted in the center there is no rust forming on the rotors outside of the contact surface.

Haha EXCELLENT pictures and write up! I will definitely explore your old posts! Also, excellent advise about the magnetic sheet and vinyl numbers, I was reading a recommendation to apply tape to a waxed surface (apply wax, dont remove, apply tape to haze) but I didnt really want duct tape on the side of my G.
Smoovearrow: I see youre in redding, which track do you go to?

I have only autox'd mine so far. I'm building mine up and gradually turning this car into a strictly track car. I still need a few more mods before I would feel comfortable taking my boosted automatic to the track lol
I checked out your sig link, you drive a hell of a beast!
G15: Thunderhill in Willows, Ca. Fun track, I plan on returning in Sept. or November. Other than that I have been autocrossing in Redding for about 4 years and go to Medford, Or. twice a year at a track in White City. I plan on attending Reno-Fernly and Infinion Raceway next year.. Have you raced your G yet in Nor Cal?
I have only brought my 05 to my local drag strip. One pass and I realized I wasnt cut out for it, and neither was the G. The jump was okay, went into second okay, then mashed the clutch in for third and it never came back. I thought it did, because I popped it pretty hard, so I mashed the gas again thinking I was in third and it just redlined
. I ran a 22 second pass in second. Pretty good considering my truck ran a 17 all out. Needless to say, I have a new engine now, and a new stage 3 clutch. I learned my lesson
