Search for fuel gauge problem - detailed thread. There are descriptions of how several people resolved their different gauge problems including problems with the cluster in this thread.
Question for someone who's had their g since new. Have the fuel gauges on these cars ever been right and if so how long did they last? Oh, and is re-soldering the pins on the cluster the last resort or is it pretty common? Thanks!
On my second Infiniti a 2012 G37S over another six years I traded that one in just short of 95k miles and never had a fuel gauge problem
On my third Infiniti a 2016 Q70 with eighteen thousand miles I never experienced a fuel gauge problem
I've seen many posts over the years with many having this issue with different year and model Infiniti's
I'm wondering if the root cause is that many of those possibly putting additives into their fuel tanks that may be the cause of this problem?
FWIW I only use regular 87 octane in all of my Infiniti's and have never used any additives or used any non Infiniti parts

It's not that soldering the resistor is some kind of last resort or something. It's just easier to check the senders first using the instructions above. If you check all the easy stuff first and everything is fine, then eventually you need to check the cluster. If you can solder, it's pretty easy to repair yourself using the diy on this site. If you can't solder, it seems there are a few places online that will repair the cluster for relatively short money. I don't know what percentage of these failures are the senders and what percentage are in the cluster. I only know mine was in the cluster. I read lots of stories here with people cleaning and replacing sensors and not fixing the problem so my gut tells me it's more often in the cluster.
I wasn't the original owner but the gauge in my 06x was fine until 2017 and about 230k miles. And then it did the thing where it would indicate normally for the full half of the tank and then get stuck and indicate half tank no matter how little was in the tank. Seems like this is one of several common bad gas gauge symptoms.

It's definitely accurate but when you think you're on E, you really should have 3,4 gallons left. I've never been able to pump more than 16 gallons in the tank
I put in 19 gallons once, I was on empty empty empty.
Post 72 on this thread details the resistors that need to be re-soldered to fix the gas gauge IF that's your issue, definitely read resistance on both harnesses on the fuel tank though since that's a super easy test. 30 seconds to remove the back seat, unplug both harnesses, measure resistance, compare to what the fuel level on the dash says, plug in harnesses, snap seat back on.
