I love the thing and I have gotten pretty good at it where the shifts can be smoother than when I'm in D if I want them to be.

How does a shift get any smoother or rougher on an automatic transmission? The manual mode doesn't change how fast it actually shifts from one gear to the next. There isn't any clutch that you are controlling to make it smoother or not.

There is quite a bit of difference in how the manual mode feels than automatic mode in terms of shift quality. The auto mode is seamless and is completely smooth while in manual mode, if you shift too early, there is definitely a harsher shift. If you mimic how the computer shifts in terms of rpms, you get a smooth shift (just like auto mode). I bet the computer doesn't adapt fast enough in manual mode thereby creating the difference between the auto mode and manual mode.

I use MM about 15-20% now. My usual short drive to work is suburban streets with no speed or high RPM appropriate and stop-and-go (kids going to school-I pass three of them on the way). On the on-off ramps, passing and more fun roads I enjoy using it.

I used to use it in a straight drag, but found that straight up "DRIVE" is faster. You'll get much smoother and faster shifts, but I still use MM mode from time to time.
