Who changes their own oil?

I'm switching over to Mobil 1 Synthetic and thought I'd do the work myself. A quick look under the hood and the bottom side I don't see the oil filter. I wondered if I'm getting into something I'm better just paying someone else to do. Anyone else change their own fluids with just the basic garage tools?

oil change is cake. you can't see the filter cuz there is an engine cover you have to move. there are like 16 bolts. other than that it's pretty simple

My thoughts on this one is that I'd prefer to let the dealership change the oil while under warranty. However.....

On my Nissan Maxima, I began to change the oil myself after 60k, and discovered screws missing from the dealership. Probably they didn't feel like putting them all back in and figured 2/6 screws were good enough to hold the shrouding in place. I don't like that.

Secondly, you want to run synth when the Infiniti doesn't come with it. That's even more of an incentive to DIY. If you pay the dealership to do it, you'll never know that synth went in. I'm not saying they're dishonest, but it's possible that when most of the cars get dino juice, someone forgets that your order was for synth. So to rule out human error, you could DIY.

If you want it done right, you're not off-base for doing it yourself. My .02

I changed mine at 1k miles and plan to for the rest of the time I have the car. Not sure about other years, but my 06 has a hole in the cover where the oil will drain out without removing anything. For the filter, I was able to remove 5 or 6 bolts and tab to have plenty of access to it. I also plan on changing to M1 or redline once I get to 10k miles or so.

Same oil, same interval too.

When I started doing my own changes I thought about using some different filters since I wasn't sure about the stock filter on 5k intervals. Anyone using something like the Mobil 1 filters?

I change mine every 3k with M1. It saves a lot of money to DIY.

Used to change the oil myself when I had the Lexus ES. I plan to start doing it for the G upon the next oil change date. Once you know how to do the process the first time, it's pretty easy the next time around. Just make sure to also replace the oil drain plug washer (you can get them at the dealer or find a similar size at Lowe's or Home Depot).

I do. There should be a hole in the cover that gives you access to the nut, and you can just remove 3 or 4 screws and bend the cover down. This should give you enough room to get to the oil filter. Took me about an hour and a half the first time, but takes about half an hour once you know what you're doing.

Here is some great information for anyone using the oem filter. oem oil filter breakdown I use napa gold filters which are made by Wix and through the link above are proven to be superior.
