u dont touch the shifter when u are taking a 70mph turn, u either do it before or after not during a turn.

Every track is going to yield different results. Its combination of a different track and a driver who has done all the experiments to his car. I don't think magazine test drivers have the car more than a day or two. Put me against any magazine tester in a 1/4 mile race with my car and the exact replica i will get a better launch, shift, ultimately a faster time. Same goes for most of us who regularly take our cars to 1/4 mile track.

yeah i wouldnt think magazine test drivers do any specific type of launching other than just stabbing the gas pedal on green. I'm sure they leave VDC on, no break torquing, and leaving it in D on an AT for the runs. We all know the opposite of this would shave off some time and add MPH on the E.T.

I don't think my car's performance is anything out of the ordinary. The track I run at is decent and the elevation is around 1,000' which isn't horrible. I usually only run in 50 to 70 degree weather so that conditions don't have a huge influence over my runs. My first run ever netted a 14.69@97.4mph and that was done in automatic mode. According to Motor Trend, their 2003 G35 sedan 5AT did 14.68@97.08mph in automatic mode. They said manually shifting doesn't help, but for my G35 it helps quite a bit, especially in ET. http://www.motortrend.com/oftheyear/...ecs_price.html. My best that day manaully shifting was a 14.49@97.7mph. The conditions were equal to around 1,000'.

I went to the strip a few months later in the spring of 2006 later in 40 degree weather and near sea levels conditions and posted a 14.32@97.9mph with a few traps getting into the 98s. I chaulked up the improvement solely to the conditions as no changes were made to the car.

In the fall of 2006, I went back to the strip with the MD spacer. Conditions weren't very favorable, ~1,800' if I remember right. The car was running higher 14.3s/14.4s@99mph. I found that acceptable for a mod that gains about 10whp/10wtq.

People that know me, know that I don't believe in "freak" cars. I believe in:

1) Conditions - huge impact on ET/MPH
2) Driver ability - huge impact on ET
3) Track - some are simply quicker than others

I know that Motor Trend, Car & Driver, and Road & Track disengage traction control, stability control, brake torque, and manually shift if they feel it makes an improvement in acceleration. They specifically state that. One thing they don't do is exceed redline.

Additionally, their times are corrected to sea conditions and temp and the posted runs are an average , not a best.

Dave's numbers make perfect sense when compared to my own experiences at the track.. the old 03's are a scrappy bunch. I've never lost to any FM platform car including z's, except for EdG's massively modded Coupe. Before his mods - he's a 6MT, I used to be able to hang or beat him. Now he owns me. The 5AT is one of the best tranny's out there. Hope the 6AT is just an iteration of the old one.

i wonder if we would be having this debate if the auto offered was a 6 speed with the same ratios?

i also notice that many of the side by sides are auto sedan vs manual coupe.
naturally the weight differences alone will help the auto sedan keep up with the manual coupe.

do i wish i had found a manual sedan vs an auto, darn straight! but i still appreciate a decent auto when i see one.

Ha, take it easy. You will smoke more than half the cars on the street with your AT. $10 on OCG35
I want to get a 6MT for the fun of it, not for the quickness.

yeah, but AT sedans are slugs... that’s what "unknowing" MT/coupes tell me anyway... and many say mods don't do anything... so?... I guess I just have a slug AT sedan with mods that are a waste of money
