Broken Drivers Seat Frame
I love my g but the seat rocking thing is driving me crazy.
Once my titan gets its breaks repaired, I'm going to try and DIY repair my seat. Always wanted an excuse to buy a welding torch and I suppose this is as good as any.
It surprises me that something like this which is a huge safety hazard isn't getting more publicity.
I was in an accident 3 years ago where I got hit by a drunk driver head on, so I'm getting a little paranoid about this.

Well, I had to fix my seat last night. Have a variation on the problem maybe. I had the front height adjuster bracket bolts come out... I would almost swear they were not put in and tightened down... The blue thread lock was still on the bolts and was not scratched or anything.
Basically, I wiggle around before I put my seatbelt on and a few weeks ago the seat popped and then started the rocking about a 1/4 inch. Then yesterday after a quick trip, it went to full rocking chair...
Then went to my goto place - this forum and did a search and got some background on it. Luckily it was just two bolts, but still a pain to get them back in. Had to remove the seat, but not from the car - just enough to get it up and some room. I have battle scars from it now!
Thanks to all for the pics and info!!!

revival of dead thread
Well, the thread wasn't completely dead, but it seems as if the G-hater left anyhow. But, guess what...
My ******' seat is a rockin' chair.
My goddamn Blows audio hates CDs.
****.
I've owned this car for 2 years or more, it's really a beautiful car (that's why I bought it), it's a lotta fun to drive and I still like it...but seriously, these cars are lemons, from what I can tell.
Like the original G-hater, I've owned Jeeps in the past. Jeeps are POSs in that they squeak and rattle and everything feels like ish. But guess what: Jeeps are higher quality vehicles than this G35. My Jeeps just work. My tape deck from 1991 still works, my seats only rock because Jeep designed them to and the **** rattles because I beat it.
The G35 on the other hand decided to stop playing CDs because I inserted a brand new Lamb of God CD, the seat rocks because I'm too fat (took about 5000 miles to develop on a car I bought w/ less than 40k...I am near 300 though), the idle is rough, **** rattles and the car has road noise like a Tercel.
I have to disagree w/ the original G-hater on the Ford point though. I've owned Fords, they have their problems, but so far I've had better luck w/ Fords. I have a work vehicle I drive that's a 1994 Explorer w/ almost 300k and it feels as solid as my G (just gutless from lack of compression).
Anyhow, the seat thing is boo**** and downright dangerous. The Blows audio system (broken CD changer, blown speakers) is just boo****. I haven't had the bushing issue, but there are other little things like having to reset my power windows and leather cracking on the seats that are just unacceptable on a vehicle of this caliber.
I really wanna love my G35, but dude is right, people that blindly defend this car really are just fanboys. A Mustang of similar age would be holding together better. If they weren't buttfukkinugly I'd rather have one of those.

Clearly the Japanese didn't think to design the driver's seat for the "American weight class"
Interesting thing about the blows audio components (which I also hate) ... they're among the very few parts on the car that are made in the US.

. The only issue that I think was of boor design was the compression rod bushings. but for around $100 it was not that big of a deal. I too have had chevy, jeep, suzuki, cadillac, honda, etc. and so far the G seems to have had the least amount of problems.
clearly.
They didn't mind making the car itself in the "American Weight Class." At about 3500lbs, the G is just as porky as a Mustang. I've seen Mustang (fox body) seats break from fat guys and lotsa torque too.
Really the first problem I noticed in this car was the seats. They didn't rock at first, but they really just didn't quite fit my upper torso or ***, and the adjustment didn't go low enough. I took the seat out to adjust the adjustment, but couldn't figure out where the rocking was coming from (it seemed to be play in the motors). The original owner might have been a big dude too, judging by the little black hairs stuck in the headliner.
I can't really blame the engineers for thinking very few customers would be over 6' and way north of 250. Most guys my weight can't really fold themselves down into the seats, and if they do, it's not exactly graceful.
Had I test driven this car before buying it, I may have passed it on the head clearence issue. Then again, it woulda been a hard choice to downgrade to another car. I live where it snows, I woulda been better off w/ a WRX, but again: butt ugly. The G35 is hands-down the best looking modern car that can be had for under $20k.
Anyhow, that's about enough ranting...I guess I should just buy a new seat or try again to fix the one I have. All I was trying to get at was that the gripes about the G are certainly not unfounded. It's a far from perfect car, and had I been the original buyer, and paid full price, I'd be a little upset with the overall value of the car.

Good points! Yeah I should have been more patient and bought one used, but instead bought my 03.5 in October of 2002 with 7 miles on it. Still have had very little issues though and almost to 70k. I still love my G
Now I have fun doing mods, upgrades and keeping it clean.

Great help OP. fixed mines today. replaced the missing screw and took the seat to a muffler shop to have the bracket welded. I had them weld the new bolt as well so it wont fall off again. Cost me $20.00 great fix!!!
Has anyone just bought the OEM part (part # 87463-AM501 from the TSB) and installed it? I cant find any pictures of the part online...what all is included in it? I figure 150 bucks or so is too much for just a bracket and a couple of bolts....

Bumping a good thread (minus all the whining about vehicle maintenance).
I guess I'm much more **** than the previous owner(s). Apparently the previous owner sold me the car right after the warranty expired. It was never checked for oil consumption and a few of the TSBs and recalls were not fixed. The seat is one of those issues. Mine rocks back and forth and with the seat installed and all the way up, I can see the brackets but they don't appear to be broken. My to-do list just got a little longer. The seat will be coming out by the end of next weekend. It looks like the pivot joints and tracks themselves are loose.

I came here looking for this thread since my seat started rocking today. It was fixed once under warranty too.
And I've had a couple of issues with the Bose amp, and am on my 4th set of front brakes.
For me, a small price to pay for the enjoyment I get out of driving this car. 10 years old, and I love it. No need, no desire to pick up a new one.
Just my 2 cents.
