for those with the warm air problem...here is the fix

i know i just posted it under the thread, but thought that i would make another to make sure that people understood how easy this is to fix.

1. have the system off
2. press the button for recirculating air. not the fresh air.
3. the a/c system won't turn on
4. no "new", "fresh" air will come in.
5. therefore, no hot air. it stops the air from the outside coming in.

BUT MAKE SURE THE SYSTEM IS OFF!!

OK, so your procedure basically shuts the system completely off and stops all air flow. But what we want is airflow, and it should be unheated, uncooled, fresh air from the outside. This is the most basic function of a car ventilation system, having been successfully used on cars for decades!!

Noremac,

Exactly... Its like you ask for an apple and you are being handed down and orange. I guess no one can tell the difference what the question is, we are looking for the very basic function...

unheated, uncooled, fresh air from the outside

If some has a solution that works please do post.

THANKS!

yes that's what we want. if the outside air temp is 50 degrees, we want that air to come into the passenger compartment through the dashboard air vents at 50 degrees with the car having done NOTHING to alter the air temperature.

i don't think it is possible to do it unless we add an air scoop at the grill and integrate it into the intake vent system. maybe one of our fellow members can figure out how to do this and make a buck or two...

If you turn off the A/C and set the temperature to 60 does that not in effect do what you're asking? I was under the impression that the '60' setting will NOT heat the air at all, whereas setting it to 61 means you will get heat?

I could be wrong but from playing around in the cold I thought that was the behavior I'd observed.

Your impression is exactly how the system is supposed to behave. In fact, the majority of the time it does behave this way. But there are too many occasions when even setting the temp on 60 will still produce heated air.

Some have suggested that the problem resides with the intake plenum and its proximity/leakage to the heated engine compartment. This may be a small factor, but the real issue is that the heater valve is open, and some software bug is commanding it to misbehave!

sunroof? open that and you get lots and lots of ambient air. want more, shift gears. not the best solution but it's a solution

OK then I'm assuming this is limited to a number of VINs or something? I'm pretty sure mine works this way all the time, unless I just haven't tinkered with it enough to observe this behavior...

The problem will only tend to occur under select conditions, so you may not have encountered it yet. AFAIK, there was not a change to the HVAC unit throughout 2003-2004.

The problem seems to happen during moderate temperature days of spring or fall (here in the east), say 60-65 degF, when outside air is very comfortable, but when sun load tends to heat up the car somewhat. It is during these times that a little fresh outside air should be the perfect solution. And most of the time, the car behaves. But occasionally, it insists on providing a blast of heated air. I've been able to stop the problem (sometimes) by flipping on the A/C, then switching it back off. It's unpredictable, but extremely annoying when it happens!!!
