When to change out the diff fluid?

Morning!

I recently did the 30k maint at the dealer. They did a trans fluid drain\fill, but not a diff fluid change. At what interval should this be performed? When I said I wanted the Premium service they deterred me from it saying it would cost over $1000 to do everything. They had their own "custom" 30k service. Should I do the diffs at the next oil change?

Thanks,

Lew

Do the diff yourself. Takes 10 minutes and will be cheaper and you will get better fluid. Don't even have to jack up the car.

Thanks for that. But my question was WHEN to do it? At what mileage?

I do mine at 60k intervals if that helps. It certainty doesn't hurt to change it more often. How much shorter intervals help is the real question. If you track your car, drive aggressive, burnouts, and the like, it's probably a good idea to change it sooner. If you just rack up miles like everybody else, you probably don't need to change it but every 45-60k miles.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I should add that my daily commute is 24 miles total on local roads with frequent stops and occasional stop and go traffic.

Every 30k under the Premium schedule. But you may be better off with DIY or going to an independent shop. Dealership service centers also charge for all the "Checks and Inspections" but when you really look into it, they're not replacing that much and IMHO is not worth paying them $1k for.

p.s. Under Schedule 1 or 2, i don't think there is an interval for differential. Check that link above. But it never hurts to replace them.

Wow you're right. If you follow schedule 1 or 2, they never call for Differential fluid change, just inspections.

Does that mean if I never replace my fluid, that I should be good? Assuming I follow schedule 1....

I don't think Scdudule 1 and 2 call for trans fluid change either.

I think 50k would be good. Need to flush all the fluids on the car. Never done them yet (except the oil).

Thanks all! Looks like between 50k-60k would be a good time to replace them.

^ its a super cheap DIY since you need less than two bottles of fluid and about 10-15mins so id recommend doing it more around 30k considering how dirty it gets.

Just open the fill bolt and stick your little finger in there to see the condition of the fluid and you will see what i mean.

honestly..i think it could go 100K depending on driving style. Hell i have never changed or had diff fluid changed on any of my previous cars..and no issues.

My 98 GP had 170K on it when i sold it..never had diff fluid changed since about 50K..and trans the same thing..lol
