Bank 1 VTC Cover Removal
No worries, some folks on here helped me when I did mine so glad I can help someone else. I bought new gaskets. Their cheap enough and I don't like leaks. The local Nissan dealer had a decent price on them. Put them on dry no additional goop needed. Make sure to use good install technique and you'll be fine. Additional notes: I used a 1/4" drive to tighten the cover bolts. Go small if your not using a torque wrench so you don't have to much leverage and you can feel how tight the bolt is getting. Snug was good for me. Also a swivel joint will help you get to the two bolts that hold the pump bracket to the block. If memory serves, this is the bracket that covers bolt 8 on the VTC cover. "The Hidden Bolt". I'll watch the forum for your next question. LOL!

There should be a kit of paper shims that come with the magnet. You will use these shims to release the spring clips holding the magnet in place. There will be instructions and shims included with the magnet. Put the shim in to the proper depth away from the clip and then slide it around until you disengage the clip. You will not be able to install the shim to the proper depth if your right on top of the clip so that is the best way to find where the clip engages or locks in. Make sense?

Hope you bought the magnets off ebay. They are about $180 ea. PITA to have to do this repair but it should satisfy and eliminate the CEL. You will regain that little bit of missing performance and the slow start hesitations should go away. Don't forget to perform the relearn process once you've completed the repair.

For the ‘crazy’ side, Ive managed to get the belt tensioner off and it actually looks like that’s where the bolt #8 is(meaning I wouldn’t have to take off the power steering pump… I think)…. but that’s where I
stopped.
and yes I bought them off EBAY for the price you mentioned and I think the name is “coutlerstore”, it saidgenuine parts so I went for it.
Good deal....less you have to take off and move around the better. I like how you describe it as the crazy side. Fits the bill. I might also call it the stupid side. Why in the hell would you hide that bolt behind that bracket?
update: I just realized one of the bolts is very close to the PS pump and I need to move the pump a little smh, Just when I thought I was close to taking the cover off. Problem is my 14mm is a shallow socket and I have to get the Deep one to be able to take it off… sigh
We use these Performance Tool brand sockets at work and absolutely BEAT ON THEM. It's a very ruggedly well-built set of sockets/ratchet and I definitely recommend them if you're looking for a set with a blow-mold case. You will need to buy a 12mm shallow because for some odd reason the kit doesn't come with one?
All the PT brand stuff holds up well to daily ab/use.

How did yall manage to get the plug for the retarder out of the blue piece that mounts from the outside of the cover? I'm looking at mine but don't see a release tab or anything

I have counted 7 screws in total removed so far so there’s one I need to look for.
I haven’t tried it yet but yeah I was looking at it and didn’t see how to get it off
