DIY: How to give your nasty keyfobs a fresh look.

Mods, I am unable to create a thread in the DIY section so please move there for me! I put it here since there are some pixors

First, you need to find another keyfob case. click for details

Pry open your keyfob fron the loop where the key goes and it should look something like this

Remove the button keypad that houses the remote chip and the clear button plate. Make sure you have all pieces

Remove the battery with a small screwdriver, it should pop right out. make sure you're not staring too close because they can come flying out and take your eye out.

Using a small screwdriver, remove the metal plate that completes the battery contact to remote chip. *WARNiNG* be very patient with this piece as it is easily bendable. Don't breakt it half. Remove the side where there is a little hole and slowly pry it out. The other side has a slot that locks it in place, so once you have it out of the hole, it should slide right out.

Reinstall the battery and contact plate onto the new keyfob housing. The slots that locks the contact plate might still have a membrane of plastic on there, use the same flat head screwdriver and "devirginize" the slot. It should take very little pressure and the plate should slide right in.

Reinstall the new buttons onto the other half of the housing, as well as the clear button plate. *WARNING* make sure you have the "bumps" on the clear button plate facing the inner part of the rubber in order for your buttons to work properly.

Press the 2 new halves of the fobs together and you should have a brand new remote looking something like this.

Note: If you want to check that you installed the button plate correctly, press your new remote and if you here a tiny click, you have done this process the right way. If you do no hear a click and the buttons don't seem to work very well, repeat that step and install it the right way.

rather than replacing everything (battery, etc). and using the new fob, could you just swap out the buttons or front cover only?

yeah you can, you can swap out any piece you want.

in the DIY, you just swapped front cover, back cover, and the button pads.

You can swap any of the 3 or all of them to achieve a new look.
