Do NOT buy RT Cats

I'm sure many of you are aware of the issue with Random Technology Cats. I figured I could avoid it but on my way to work thursday one of them collapsed. I haven't had them but 2 months and I will be sure to post pics tomorrow. Needless to say I'm pissed, I put the stock ones back on and I'm debating whether I want to hollow out the RT cats and try that out. Just a word from the wise, stay away from Random Technologies.

Re: Do NOT buy RT Cats

And for the counter point... I bought the RT High Flow Cats back in February, have put 5500 trouble free miles on them and they complimented my Plenum and intake set up very well up to now.

The only thing I'm doing is keeping the car ~2500 rpms or under until it is warmed up. This appears to "be the trick".

counterpoint x2

I've had them on for about 6k miles. No problems whatsoever.

I also kept the rpms below 3k until the engine temp is normal.

Re: Do NOT buy RT Cats

I just bought some RT cats and won't be putting them on for a while. At least till the pod pillar from D. Stoner arrives. (I'm getting several things done at once) But what is exactly happening to them? Can you use them after this colpase happens? Should I return them before its too late?

RETURN RETURN RETURN. i know if it was me i wouldnt want to take a chance with it. MANY MANY people have experienced the collapse. Its not a small problem that only a couple of users have experienced.

Re: Do NOT buy RT Cats

my point is I had them for 13,000 miles w/o any problems, and I've always taken it slow until the car warms up. This problem has become too common, not every person who owns RT Cats ends up with my dilemma but a good number of owners have. Luckily I dont live too far from where they are made so I will see about getting them replaced.

Re: Do NOT buy RT Cats

If you have not installed the cats I'd return them for the Crawford’s. That might be a little safer, but then again, how many cars with Crawford Cats have 13,000 miles on them. I *think* the RT Cats have been on the market longer than the Crawford’s, but I could be wrong about that fact. (I've only been involved with the G35 since ~Dec. 2003.) The longer a product is the only thing on the market the more people will own it.

Think of it this way; if the RT Cats came out first (say 1 year early) and sold 1000 sets of cats. Then along came Crawford and the next year they split the same sales numbers 50-50 (RT sells 500 and Crawford sells 500), that means there are 1500 people with RT Cats and the odds are that 1000 of the RT owners will have 10,000-15,000 more miles on their cars. This allows for more people to hear about RT Cats collapsing, but does not allow sufficient time for the Crawford’s to have the "same opportunity" to either hold up or collapse.

I'm not saying Crawford Cats will collapse, just trying to make a point to the people who are quick to bash a product and support another w/o comparing the 2 products equally. You know, apples to apples.

I love my caveat!!!
