There's a buzz with regards to high/abnormal engine oil consumption rates in the general boards here on 'Driver and on My350Z.

I was wondering how many of you local folks have been dealing with this issue and what the outcome(s) may have been?

My '05 6MT G35 coupe has recently been dealer documented to consume 4 quarts of engine oil in some 2,739 miles.

I had the dealer do the oil consumption test on my 03, 6mtc. After 3 checks at 1000 mile per check I was down only about 1/2 quart after 3000 miles. I have switched back to Dino oil as well.

Andy 4 quarts is a lot to lose between oil changes. I was losing oil for awhile but found out it was not the engines fault but a few oil leaks from the tranny cooler.

Good deal, Wes. Yes, most of the service consultants, whom I have spoken to, suggest using Dino grade in lieu of a synthetic oil when there is a concern with oil consumption issues.

Yes, it is, Paul. If I followed Infiniti's recommended oil change interval of 3,750 miles, my car would never make it back to the dealership . . . Hmmm . . . Stop it . . . It was just a thought.

I had oil consumption problems that Infiniti wouldn't acknowledge. After my perfectly maintained and fully documented motor went BOOM, I fought Infiniti until they did the right thing and put in a new longblock.

06 6mt with a consumption rate of 3/4 quart every 2,000 miles...Not excessive in Nissan eyes but excessive in mine.....I too am thinkng of cutting my losses and getting a late 90's 300zx twin turbo as those engines are bulletproof.......

Is there a specific motor burning oil irregularly?

The 350Z's with the RevUp engines are prone to excessive rates of engine oil consumption, as well.

Here's their link:

A handful of owners have had success with Nissan, after an uphill battle, in getting new engine replacements.

John, I saw your other post in the other thread. I will be filing a complain with the NHTSA, as well. It seems to me, at least, that Infiniti/Nissan should recognize your oil consumption as being excessive. It appears that they drew a safety level for themselves to limit potential future liabilities.

This is a start. Thanks for your due diligence, John.

Shoot, I have been adding an outrageous amount of engine oil in between oil changes for the past 2 years. I simply have had enough of this.

Hang in there, John. Keep a level head and be persistent. Good luck to you. We both and unfortunately, many others, may have an uphill struggle ahead of us.

I just filed with the NHTSA, as well.

Oh, have you tried to call the Infiniti Consumer Affairs people? (1.800.662.6200)

John, hopefully, we will see you there at the BBQ. If so, please track me down. I would like to have a chat with you about your oil consumption rate(s).

Oh, btw . . . Which dealership have you been going through? In any event , hope to see you, tomorrow.

Boris, I am curious . . . What was your car's oil consumption rate prior to the "BOOM!"?

Yeah, I lose about an entire quarter after 3500 miles. I could've paid less for a civic do a oil change every 7000 miles and not have to worry about a thing. But now I'm paying much more for a nice car that loses oil due to regular driving. This has been addressed many times and from what I understand Nissan/Infiniti will not be putting out a permanent fix for this. Unless someone with deep pockets and all the time in their hands puts out a class action suit against them... anyone... it will remain as it stands. Lately, I've been tempted to just trade in the G and get an IS350, I don't hear about oil burning problems there. But I would lose a lot of money from all the mods I installed...

Jeff . . . I wish I had your oil consumption rate. So, your engine is consuming some 1.25 quarts in 3,500 miles? At my current rate, my engine would have consumed all 5 quarts of oil by 3,500 miles.
