I was there for AzSi22s runs, it's exactly as he said. BTW, this guy's an expert at running the DynoJet - Believe what he says. We ran my "G" that same night.

Thumbs up Motordyne Plenum Spacers, Non-RevUp Engine Feedback

Took a couple of nice drives this weekend - Saw Tony (Motordyne Engineering) yesterday to get a 1/2" spacer and then to DaveO today for install and a couple of tweaks (thanks again Dave!!!)

Install went great; Dave has done a few so it was no prob... Since he's out towards the desert the altitude and air temp were much higher than my car is accustom to (I'm nearly at sea level). So when it came time for butt dyno, I wasn't sure about the benefit. The engine definitely seemed to have more growl... Previously the exhaust note overpowered the engine sound most of the time, now the engine seemed as loud (not unpleasant or obnoxious).

So Dave asks what I thought... hmmm it's definitely as fast as when I started. GREAT says Dave - wait till you get home!

Let me tell you - it's not SC or TT but there IS more oomph!!! Prior to install I would need WOT to kick into overdrive/passing gear to get around freeway traffic. On my way home today the response was there before needing overdrive. But then the surprise really came. When I reached OC (home) the temp was 71 (27 degrees less than Dave's house) and altitude much lower... he was right! Big difference! At the first stop light I accelerated normal on green - butt dyno pulled my eyes wide open! I didn't even floor it (cause I wasn't expecting much) - but once I felt that, every dead stop launch from there the rest of the way home was a blast! I drive stop and go (in a very spirited fashion) often – there are absolutely results from this mod!

Sorry for the novel, but as you can tell I’m excited! It was a long day, great drive, good time with Dave... and of course I'm pleased to feel the gains! Tomorrow is TS for ECU - can’t wait for dyno day next week!

LOL! Now that sounds like a plausible explanation.

AzSi22s (or Lou),
Am I reading this correctly. You run your own DynoJet shop?...

Haha, unfortunately no. I am good friends with a local shop that has a dynojet. I can test things occasionally during off hours. As long as I run it by the boss first

My guess is that it was done intentionally to meet fuel economy requirements, much like many other similar cases of apparent under-powering. Who knows tho...

It makes me happy when someone installs a mod that makes them happy. I may give this 1/2 inch spacer a try, but where do I get it? I also bought a cf z-tube and fuji y-pipe I never installed, so I may install everything at the same time.

I got the spacer from Tony at Motordyne Engineerig: www.motordyneengineering.com

There was a recent group buy going on, you might want to see if it's still open - pretty decent discount. Last I saw though, Tony was only ablet to fill about 15 orders due to very short notice, so it might be too late. Try PM-ing Tony to see if he will do another group by soon - his user name out here is hydrazine.

Good luck with your installs - I'm certain you will be happy!!

Is it true that once you get the spacer on, your OEM engine cover will not fit right? I'm just curious if that goes the same for an OEM 350Z type cover. Now that your's is 1/2 inch higher, what do you have as an engine cover?

Thanks for the great review too

I could understand the G35 engine cover trapping heat because it covers the plenum, but what about the 350z engine cover? That doesn't fit either? So once you go 1/2 plenum spacer, no type of engine cover will fit?

Currently my engine cover is off... but that's only because I'm helping DaveO with some temp testing... Personally I like the cover and may put it back on later. Tony tells me it will fit with the 1/2" spacer - but I have a sedan, I'm pretty sure it will not fit on coupe or 350Z (you'd have to ask Tony "hydrazine" for confirmation). As far as (cover on) heat soak issues - DaveO tells me it's definitely better to have cover off. Theoretically it makes a lot of sense, but I'm going to test it out when I'm done helping his current research. If I put the cover back on I will reverse the back grommets, which gains a little clearance.

BTW - I dynod at Church Automotive (dynapack) yesterday - 271 hp! Considering mine is an AT sedan I'm pretty happy. Butt dyno has been confirmed! For an '04 and earlier, I definitely recommend the spacer - with or without cover! The '05 is still questionable... I don’t think enough people have dynod for viable recommendation. Yesterday an '05 did pre and post and got nowhere near the gains I did... From what I hear though, there are some '05s that are seeing improvement. Generally it seems that some of the updates on the '05 make it harder to get more gains from bolt-ons.

i got my spacer installed too by Tony yesterday at Church's.
i had the twilight blue g35c, and i got the 5/16" spacer. 1/16" smaller than 3/8"
took it for a test drive and i could feel the difference right away. definitely sounds deeper too.
my 350z engine cover fit over the 5/16".

Great product!

I think it (engine cover) will fit all except the 1/2".
