How do I properly disconnect the car battery? Someone on here said just remove the + side. Then I read that you just need to remove the - side and leave the positive side alone.

Either will do it.

The Infiniti Service Manual always refers to disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal when it wants you to removing battery power. In reality, removing the cable from either terminal will remove battery power since it breaks the serial circuit.

Disconnecting the negative cable is a little safer than the positive cable. Why? Because the positive terminal is connected to a limited number of discrete points (i.e. to the radio, headlights, etc) while the negative terminal is connected to the frame of the vehicle. What that means is that if you disconnect the positive terminal, you merely need to touch the frame of the car (or anything connected to the frame) and the positive terminal of the battery to complete the electrical circuit and give yourself one heck of a shock. Whereas if you disconnect the negative terminal, then you must be touching one of those discrete points (say positive terminal on the radio) and the negative terminal of the battery to complete the electrical circuit and shock yourself - clearly this is much harder to do.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. I’ve never worked on a car before and would like to give this mod a try. I’m just a little cautious. Especially with the airbag. It makes me nervous.

THANKS!!! I've always wondered about this and your explanation makes perfect sense!

Disconnect the battery and follow the instructions very carefully and you will be fine.
If you get to the wiring harnesses and can't get them apart, stop and re-read the instructions again. Don't lose patience and start tugging... you'll end up with more trouble than you want.
There's a clear explanation on how those airbag clips come apart. Just make sure you understand all the steps before you start and you'll be fine.

Plus, if you need help, drop your questions right here. Someone is always online at one time or another so help is always a minute or two away.

Good luck.

Sounds great, I really appreciate it. I will be doing this next week and if I run into any issues I'll be posting in a second. I don't want to mess this up. Thanks again.

No can do kind sir!

I got door panels to CF this weekend!!! if I manage to take apart the door panels and return them on properly without destroying anything, maybe that will give me the confidence to attempt the paddle shifters :P

One other reason to remove the negative terminal clamp is the hot side (+) can touch a metal ground and cause a big spark. I've done it many times.
