On the sport a/s side, the Envigor would be a great Jack of all trades way to go. Decent wear and a/s ability (being an X helps), and handles well during the summer months. I'd also look at Conti's DWS. Those have been a G pleaser, especially in the winter, for quite some time. For a touring tire Michelins Primacy MXV4 does an excellent job across the board.

 

Would an asymmetrical all season give me decent longevity?

 

Depending on the tire yes. In general, asymmetrical tires tend to last a bit longer as you can rotate them more freely compared to a directional tire.

 

Hello Nick. Have a question, this will be my first G so I'm pretty newb at the G culture.

Have the 19 inch Rays coupe wheels. I know they're staggered and it would be best to run something close to 225/40 in the front and 245/40 in the back.

But what about trying to run the same tire size all around?

 

There are those who run the same size all around, however, many also have stability control/VDC issues when doing so. I've seen lots of threads here and at My350Z.com about VDC problems when running a square set up on a coupe. Probably not the best idea to risk it for what small reward in being able to rotate you'll get.

Neal and anyone else with experience,
Reviews of UHP All Season tires are varied,with no snow testing or simply out of date with new designs on the market. Three tires for 225/55/17 are in the running: Conti DWS, GY F1 Asymmetric A/S, and the new Michelin Pilot Sport 3 A/S. Infiniti reviewers on TIRERACK are mixed on the DWS, some people complaining greatly of the soft sidewall, poor highway tracking and a terrible marriage to the AWD system. GY may be a great all-rounder with less to offer in snow and ice. Michelin is untried, though the reputation is excellent.

THOUGHTS?

 

The two tires are very very close performers. I tend to trust the Conti reviews a tad more as they have been on/in the market longer so more people have had a chance to fully cycle through them. Our overall test results had the B-Stone slightly ahead of the DW. You'll have a bit better ride and quietness from the DW but better handling when pushed out of the S04.

Of the three, the Conti will be the better tire during winter months. I think the DWS sidewalls get blamed for the softer handling, when instead it's mainly due to the choppy tread design they have (but that's what makes them good in the snow). The GY and Mich haven't been on the market long enough for us to really get a good idea on how they handle snow. My prediction would be use in moderate to low snow climates or areas that see little accumulation. Probably won't be the best option for snow belts or northern states. Time will tell!

 

Thanks, Neal. I understand the conti's added value in winter months,though, I guess I'm more concerned about the other 7-8 months that I'm more apt to push the tire on dry or wet. The AS tire is already a compromise, but the fact that winter driving for me (in the the northeast) tends to be on plowed and treated roadways has me bias toward an excellent performing tire on dry, wet and cold surfaces, rather than ice and snow. Still, I'm always aware that good performance is most needed in poor driving conditions or when you REALLY NEED TO STOP!

Great option there would be the BFG Sport Comp-2. Works really well as a sport tire that's practical enough for everyday use. Of the ones available in your oe sizes, that's by far the most versatile.
