Hello all from Tire Rack
Tires
Hi Neal, I'm getting some new wheels and have to replace my rubber. Going with 245/30r20 in the front and 275/35r20 in the rear. Is it worth it to go to an asimetrical tire considering they can't be rotated anyways? If so or if not what can u recommend? I had falken 452's on my last set of wheels and I didn't mind them at all. I know the pilot super sports are good but not sure if I want to spend that much
Can u pm me with a few different prices shipped to 98230?
Thanks

Hey Neal,
06 G35x daily driver in Colorado. As long as the tire isn't a loud roly poly in the summer I'll be happy. My favorite tires so far have been Yokohama YK520's oddly enough on the S4. Considering the Conti DWS. On the OEM 17x7, can I do a 225/45/17 instead of the 215/55/17? Any thoughts on the DWS as a solid year round tire? Any others I should consider? Saw the Kumho 4X's and a few others but not totally sold on anything at the moment. Thanks!

A 225/45 is a bit shorter than what you should use. I would do 225/55 as a plus zero. The DWS is a very popular G owner tire. It works well in snow, has decent steering response, life is good, and can be rotated. It's probably the most versatile option. If those didn't exist I would look at Yokohamas Envigor or Hankook Ventus S1 Noble2 as similar performers.
How good are Kumho Ecsta 4x for 235/45/r18 tire size?
Of the following, Which ones do you suggest?. Thanks
1. Kumho Ecsta 4x
2. GoodYear Eagle GT
3. Yokohoma YK580
4. Continental ContiProContact
5. BFGoodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2
Requirement: Quiet, fuel efficient and has good handling characteristics?
I currently have Kumho and they are noisy. Thanks

The Kumho is a nice all around, does a little bit of everything tire. People have noise complaints on the Eagle GT, the BFG is a one season summer tire so it's not the quietest of the bunch either and we do not carry the YK580 so not familiar with those. The Conti would be the best noise wise and probably the better mpg tire (even though it's hard to prove mpg numbers), but would not handle as well as the 4x. In order of your requirements I would go Conti.

The Pirelli is super new on the block so it's hard to say how they will do long term. I predict they don't stay at the top spot after more feedback is given. They did pretty good in our testing a couple months ago. 760's are an ultra-high performance summer tire so they handle well, but are a tad noisier vs. an all season and will last half as long. Going back to the original requirement list, I would also look at Michelin's Primacy MXM4.
Ultimate question is what class of tire do you want to be in? We've jumped from touring, to summer only, to sport all season. Unfortunately we have to pull from one area to gain in another.

I did look at MXM4. It was around $900 OTD. I got the Pirelli for $700 OTD so went for it. They are pretty good so far. Don't know about FE yet but for sure quiet, smoother and grips good. Will have better idea once it wears out.
I know 760 were high performance tires but they were around 850 so thought of asking. Glad i went for P7. They are pretty good for price.
Thanks for your help.
I appreciate the way Tire Rack supports automotive forums. Over on Miata.net, Rudy has mentioned a new Michelin, the Pilot Sport A/S 3 W or Y speed rated.
When I let TR search for tires based on my vehicle - '07 G35 Sedan sport, so 225/50-18 Front, 245/45-18 Rear - that tire does not show up on the results list. The H or V rated A/S 3 does come up, though.
Yet the W rated A/S 3 does show it's available in my sizes.
Is it not coming up because it's new, or is there a reason it's not recommended for the Sport?
Having said all that, what do you know about this tire at this point for the G35?
We are finishing up a run with the Pirelli PZero Nero A/S We went with 235/50-18 on the fronts with these. Have had them for about 2.5 years and 40k miles, which is great, considering they're only warranted for 22.5k with staggered sizes. But they did start getting noisy a while ago, and I don't care for how the front tires have worn, even with a good alignment.
My wife commutes in the car (approx. 20k miles/yr) so longevity and quiet are important. Don't get much snow in Atlanta, but it can get cold in the winter, so an All Season tire is what we usually want. We occasionally push the car in the mountains, so I like some grip, but the car will never do any track days. Good stopping and wet handling are important, too, when dealing with Atlanta freeways.
So how does the Michelin stack up against some others that are out there, and what are your recommendations?
Thanks!

No problem!
The V rated version is made in both of your sizes. However, there is only a W version for the front and only a Y rated version for the rear. Michelin does not offer a W or Y in both sizes, just V. That's why nothing other than V shows when looking at matched pairs online.
I own that tire and love it. Great wet traction, quiet, rides well, handles aggressive driving great. Probably the best sport all season tire I've had. Winter wise is still tbd as they came out this summer. That's the only unknown at this point. For what you're doing with the tire I can confidently recommend it. Any more of a move toward longevity and you'll lose that mountain grip edge. It’s a good balance of sport and daily driving ability.
The oe sizes are way too narrow for those wheels. I would run 245/40-18 and 275/40-18. That combo will fit well and offer a good selection to choose from.
Let me know when ready!
