i didn't know this trip was replaceable...i'm surprised Nissan/Infiniti replace whole steering wheels. Maybe I can just pop mine off and repaint it then

Of course, you can.

It is really strange, that dealers replace the whole steering wheel. Though this part is not listed in the dealer's Nissan Fast catalog, but can be ordered.

I distinctly remember seeing a thread on here about someone doing precisely that. I'm pretty sure it had pics and was a bit of a tutorial. I bet a bit of searching would turn it up sooner or later.

Some penny pincher at nissan/infiniti probably crunched some numbers and figured it was more cost effective to just replace the steering wheel and go on to the next car for service.

It probably took up too much bay time pulling apart a steerting wheel and putting it back together. Also, since the airbag is involved, God forbid someone got into an accident and the airbag didn't deploy after Infiniti service and the cause was due to the Trim replacement.

So it's probably quicker/safer/mosr cost effective in the long run to not pull out the airbag just to replace trim piece and just quickly put a new steering wheel instead.

I think you're 100% correct. In fact, I think I remember making this very same point back in that thread I just mentioned too. The sad part is the implicit commentary on the competency of their service mechanics.

EDIT: Here botlfed98, I found the thread fro you:

That is total bs.So if my cruise control switch goes bad i have to buy a steering wheel for it to be safe. Why cant you renove a sterering wheel and relace it.Tthe trim has to be removed to replace the controls. Nissan is just looking to make more money or spend less.

I don't recall anyone saying you can't replace a CC switch. There will probably be very few that do go bad, so the factory directive may well be to go ahead and replace it. In the case of the thousands of steering wheel trims though, it most likely was a corporate directive to limit the chances of a costly one-in-a-thousand mistake which could have run into the millions. Also, the last time I checked, making more money and spending less was pretty much the standard accepted MO for every healthy company in a free market system.

Thumbs down

My point was you have to remove the steering wheel and air bag to get to the cruise control switch. So to say that nissan wants you to buy or change out a steering wheel for a trim is ridiculous .There is no reason why Nissan can't make the trim. And make good on it. To try and screw the customer over and make them purchase a 800 dollar steering wheel to fix a 10 dollar trim is bs. I own a 40,000 dollar car and the paint peels off like a chinese toy.So my choice is wrap my trim in carbon fiber or paint it .The paint may peel again cause the plastic is soft like baby sh&t.I love my car this is my second G35.i am just very disappointed in the service from them. May be my last Infiniti???????

His point was that Nissan themselves may much rather replace the entire wheel as it's faster, safer and cheaper for them to do.

There's nothing that prevents you from changing just the trim yourself.

Except one thing - you can't find those part-numbers in the Nissan Fast catalog!

Only some smart UAE dealers have found them and a friend of mine from there gave me the number of the beige non-bluetooth trim from his invoice . That's how it started

That would be great if they can get them, and for so cheap too! I must say that I've seen them list stuff on their site before that they can't actually get, so a quick call to them should wrap it up.

This is great stuff harp00n !
