DIY 03 G35 Coupe 5AT to 07 G35S 5AT differential swap
ok so I'm using a 30mm socket but how the hell have you guys gotten off the pinion nut....the damn flange just keeps spinning......another question....i think I might have messed up by already switching the diff fluid...will this fluid come out with the flange removed? thanks in advance
^I stuck a screwdriver through the flange which kept it from moving, and yes the fluid will leak with the flange off. If you keep the diff tilted back then it won't leak anything.
ok well i started work on my diff switch and it's a m****r f****r....if you are going to do this then make SURE that you have deep well sockets....even on the sway bar nut I'm stuck until my wife comes back with the other car....in addition to that I have a Stillen cat-back exhaust which is another pain in the ***....it's twin pipes are directly under my diff....well it's going to sit how it is until I can get more tools....good luck to everyone else trying this with a sedan
Ok well i ended up taking off my exhaust but now I'm stuck on the drive axle bolts...can somebody please tell me how you got them off...and if you had to turn the drive axle did you do it without starting the car? thanks in advance!
^Put the car in neutral and simply turn the drive shaft via the wheels. The E-brake will apply enough pressure to brake the nuts loose, its the same with the axle bolts. My car was in neutral the entire time I did the swap.
Okay...yesterday I received a 3.7 VLSD from a 2008 G37 AT. $400 shipped. I'll be undertaking the swap sometime in the next few weeks...sooner, I hope.
Looks like about three hours is a reasonable time to budget for this?
From reading this thread, it sounds like I'll have to cut the input shaft a little. Anyone think a Dremel will do the job, or do I need to buy a die grinder/cutoff wheel combination? Maybe I could rent one instead.
For those who've done this swap at home, how are you supporting the car while working underneath it? I'm thinking jack it up at the differential, then place jackstands under the jack points on the unibody. I'm not a huge fan of crawling around under cars supported by jackstands, but without access to a lift, I don't see an alternative.
Thanks to those who've contributed information so far on this swap.

It took a lot of searching, but eventually I found someone who was parting out a totaled 2008 G37 Sport Coupe over on myG37.com.
Good luck with your search. Wish me luck finding the time to install the one I have!
