Build thread? Hell no. I've had more problems building my car over the years.

I will one day, when I finally got it right. This is my next step though. There's no automatic tranny for the car that can hold 475+ Tq. The clutch packs physically aren't big enough.

I come and go on these forums. I'll be around for a while as I hunt down 6MT parts and ask some questions as we go threw the build process-- so feel free to PM me with whatever questions you've got.. .I've been threw it all. This is great ground work to give me and my crew the guts to dig into this... but I'm going to be taking detailed notes, high res pictures, and create a true guide while we do this.

Thanks for this thread. Please help me when I round up all the parts... DIY #2 coming sometime soon.

Awesome! This was supposed to be a DIY but it turned into an info thread. Hi-Res pictures and a step by step will really help progress people wanting to do this swap.

Thanks a ton for this thread! Many previous threads were full of misinformation (such as needing harness and 6mt ecu) so this cleared up a lot and helped me decide to go through with this. I have already started sourcing the parts.

Pretty much got everything except for the clutch/flywheel. (I'll get a new JWT package)
My ETA for the install is Sep/Oct. I'll be driving up to Demolition to have him do the swap. I'll make sure to take a ton of pics of the whole process.

Hello all. Thank You all for your interest and information, especially the OP, DEMoLition. Lurking on this and my350z.com for a couple of YEARS gave me the confidence that I could make this work, as others have. I don't have endless cash but I've purchased used mechanical stuff for $1000 and new ACT clutch and Stillen Flywheel for another $1000. My mechanic friend in LA is doing the work for me for a great price and I'll help as needed. I'll be able to trade services with him later so the cost will work itself out.
But he just called me today saying the clutch slave cylinder will interfere with the ABS system. I've got a 2004 sedan. Anyone have input on this? I'll go look at the car in a couple of days to see what needs to be done but the advice of anyone who's done this before would be highly valuable. Also, I'll be sure to post follow-ups and pics once mine is done.

I have done the swap successfully in my 03 coupe and i have no problems with it interfering with the ABS system. They are 2 different things. You won't have any problems.

You are very welcome. The clutch master cylinder will not interfere with the ABS pump. It is a weird setup but it is designed not to get in the way. You might be using Master cylinder from a different car. The G/Z Masters are the same and should look like the picture below. The reservoir will snake its way up and gets bolted to the secondary fire wall.

done with the swap !

It is done and it is a blast to drive! With the Stillen supercharger, cat-back and headers, the car now makes 309 whp vs. 276 whp with the 5AT.

We got the clutch pedal master cylinder thing figured out pretty easily, just like you said DEMoLITIoN. I am proud to say that I did most of the fabrication myself. One thing that will be required to be made is a bracket for the top clutch pedal mounting which attaches to the two horizontal bolts previously used for the e-brake and has a horizontal tab with a hole for the top of the clutch pedal bracket. A nut was welded at the top of the horizontal hole making it easy to just thread in a 12mm bolt from below.

My friend's mechanical and electrical knowledge, his workers and the lift bay that my G was sitting in for 3 months were totally invaluable!

I took pictures every single step of the way and if anyone wants details or pics I will gladly post.

One thing that's an issue is that the 5AT ECU won't flash to 6MT. My tuner, Seb at Specialty Z in Chatsworth, CA says that the ECU is throwing some kind of 'protection' code that won't allow flashing with a different ROM. He's using Uprev's Osiris. Is there actually a way around this or will I be forced to get a 6MT ECU?

This DIY misleads you into thinking anyone who can change a clutch can do this, it simply isn't true. Not even close. There's a HUGE missing section about custom fabbing and bracket or tension system for the clutch pedal... and the ECU wiring 'guide' is a joke.

Would have been a little different if the OP was willing to help via PMs but that isn't the case.

So let me change the warning for him.

Don't attempt this unless you have 5k++ Cash on hand (to do it right with new parts, especially if you're boosted)
Are in a hurry, it'll take forever to find interior pieces like shifter trim
Don't have a fantastic tuner and a solid ECU set up (IE haltech)
Know a ton about your G35 and how it works
Know how to weld
Have a parts car or can buy wholesale from nissan.

I truly mean no disrespect. And I'm fortunate enough to have a shop that was willing to help me through this-- I'm sure they wished they charged more... I can definitely change a clutch, and If I attempted this without help from my shop- I'd be dead in the water.

No Offense taken, but this swap is not a hard thing to do. It sounds like you had a bad experience. I would like to argue your 'warning'.

I would also like to add, you do not need to do any ECU wiring.

As for the clutch pedal, I stated it takes custom work to do. There are many ways to go about this.. OEM, RJM, wilwood, tilton. All will require custom work. They have floor mount options with internal master cylinder, top mount with external/internal option, and many more.

Know how to weld I don't weld anything when doing this swap.
Have a parts car or can buy wholesale from nissan.This would appy if you want to go through the trouble of swapping out the engine bay harness and body harness ONLY to get the clutch interlock to work. Besides those harness' the rest of the parts are easy to find

DIY 6MT Swap

I agree with DEMoLITIoN but understand Jtrain's position as well. But thread is and was invaluable for me who had decided, come hell or high water, to do the swap. Just KNOWING that it was possible provided the inspiration to actually start. Having the most complicated parts of the process as reference were invaluable as references. I don't know how many times I read and re-read the entire post to find pieces that I'd missed.

Anyway, thanks again DEMoLITIoN.
