As for changing the filter without changing the oil, it's pretty straight forward. The oil sits in the oil pan and only whatever is in the filter area will drain out. The oil that is in the pan will not drain if you remove just the filter.
I figured that... was just seeing if there some other secret way I didn't know of to not spill any oil

I have about 21k on the tach.

I will be choosing a fully synthetic oil if I can get my hands on one.
What filters would you recommend? Would a standard filter work, or are there ones made for specific types and grades of 'synthetic' oil?

Standard filters should be fine, but I think I would at least go with the factory filter or another "long life" filter like K&N, Mobil-1, or Amsoil.

I started using the "bigger" Mobil 1 in my G35. The part # is M110.

There's a whole slew of Group 4 100% synthetic oils out there. You just need to decide on which viscosity you need.

I'm using Mobil 1 0w40 with the M110 Filter.

I like this thread. Time sure goes by fast when you are reading and absorbing so much information. >.<

Which synthetic oils do you guys recommend for temperatures between -28 in the winter to +32 in the summer? I hate the Calgary weather, it flutuates so frequently.

Remember M1 0w40 is a group 4 true synthetic. They were asked by Porsche and Mercedes to make a factory fill for their cars... hence it has the ratings BMW LONG LIFE and MB229.1 (.2 or .3). These are the ratings you should be looking for.

German Castrol 0W30 is also great oil with those same ratings above (Group 4). But basically my tests of Mobil 1 samples sent into Blackstone still stands good with many other top brands. I think don't stress and jump to conclusions about other weights of M1 (not 0w40) if you're not doing extended oil changes... say changing it under 4000 miles you're fine... Mobil-1 still have top notch anti wear additives in their oil.

Just my opinion of results I have been getting back from different vehicles.

I'd go with a 0 weight. So 0w30 or 0w40 to get the flow going fast on a cold start. Most all wear occurs at startup so get that oil flowing.

EP? Not sure if I have seen that one... is it for "extra protection"? Well, if it has the MB and BMW ratings than its a group 4. However, I just got my results back from Blackstone Laboratories for

Regular Mobil 1 5w30 oil with 3500 Miles and the sample was still plenty good. Blackstone says I could go another 1000 miles if I like since the TBN was at 3.5. My car is supercharged so if you're NA, it would probably be fine for longer.

I'm trying 0w40 (with the longlife ratings / Group IV) and see if its all hype or do I have a higher TBN at the end of its use. So far, like I guessed, Mobil 1 is still great oil even if its not a true Group IV.... seems more important just to do your oil change at normal intervals!

Mobil1 EP is the "Mobil1 Extended Performance". Per Exxon Mobil, they claim it's good for up to 15000 miles.

I'm not sure if it's a Group IV. Might be just a Group III on mega steriods.. I might post at BITOG and ask the question.

been using M1 silver cap with oem filter/washer the last 4yrs. no issues
for me. my G's only driven about 5k miles a year so i only change the
oil once every spring.

same thing on my 03 cooper-s. no issues.

it's good to be sensitive about oil if you're running superchargers/turbo's
i guess on track, but not sure if you need to be that sensitive on conventional
engines and normal/spirited street driving.

What you guys think about the Castrol Syntec 5w30?

Aren't we supposed to use 5w30...as it states on our manual?

Manual says you can use 10w40 also... The thing with what the manual says, it's mostly because of CAFE standards to improve fuel economy. I would look at an oils cSt @ temp to determine if it's good to use; personally, I would prefer something on the thicker end of the Xw30 scale.

As a side note, the 2nd # is the more important one if you live in a temperate climate. The first # refers to the oil's viscosity when the oil is cool, whereas the second number refers to the oil's viscosity when the oil is at or around operating temperature.
