I have a noob question (flame retardant suit on) - I've never had a ride with aftermarket FI and am wondering what they sound like. I have heard several Roots-type applications with various engines (non-G35s) and they do sound a lot like a jet, a high pitched whine. Do turbo kits generate similar sounds, or are they quieter? Is there a way to quiet them so they sound more like vehicles with stock turbos (like BMWs which seem to be absent any unpleasantness)?

turbos are quiet until their blow-off valve(s) open to let off excess boost. superchargers are loud until their bypass valve closes to build boost. you can quiet down a supercharger by rerouting the excess air back into the intake (pre-charger) or installing a makeshift muffler (filter, cloth, insulation, or a combination of these items).

You will hear some spooling of the turbo but even on stock FI cars you'll hear some of that. The typical "whoosh" sound occurs when you press the clutch in to vent the pressure through the blow-off valve. If you don't want that sound, then rather than using an atmospheric bov, you'd use a recirculating bov that vents the pressure directly into the exhaust; utilizing a dump tube. Someone else can chime in with the specifics.

Thansk bigc and sTony - very helpful. I'm glad I asked the question before I had my exhaust designed. I have a guy I'm looking to quote me on a custom job (AAA Performance) and will have to make sure he's thinking about the impact of a potential turbo mod later down the road. I'm still not sure I'm going to do the turbo, but I have to admit getting my doors blown of by an E46M3 (modified) the other day really left me...ahem...peeved. I found myself craving horsepower.

Problem is, the last car I built was 20 years ago and it was a 1966 Plymouth with a big Hemi. Those skills don't exactly translate (or exist anymore for that matter).

Water injection

I swear by the water injection, but not a bought system. The brain does it's best to keep the fuel air perfect but it falls short. I have made a home made version that takes the carbon off the pistons cat converter o2 sensor and the complete exhaust system. The key is to get the correct flow rate or you hydrolock the motor. This is trial and error but i got it down, i've put this in2 the last 4 cars and never ran better with no mods but a K&N air filter and of course lots of grounds from block to body. I love my G35 but the grounds suck only 1 from body to block and this is why window and seat motors burn out. Put some million strand 8 gauge wire for this mod and it won't void warranty. You won't believe what results water injection can do, but do it slow as it will raise exhaust gas temps, steam cleaning engine from inside.

I have been reading about HKS and Stillen but not much about Vortech or ATI prochargers so just two questions.
1. What is your opinion on the best SC brand/kit.
2. Why do you like that kit.

2005 G35 Sedan, REV-UP, I am going to purchase one in the next 6 months and trying to get the best kit for the money. I am looking in just buying the complete kit (bolt-on with no other mods).

^^^My best advice to you is to do more research on here and on my350z.com. There are many pros and cons to each kit. There really isn't one that is the "best."

Speaking of n00bs, here is a video for noobs created by alberto from my350z.com. It is NSFW due to language but definitely a must watch for n00bs.

question: about how much would it cost to install and tune my 04 g if i were to buy a 50 state legal vortech s/c?

i currently have 82k miles now, is there anything i could replace in the engine or add to the engine to prolong the life of the engine if i were to install a s/c?

Trust me as i had the stillen kit way back in mid 2003 as it was the only safe kit out.Today i wouldnt rec this kit to my worst enemy as it produces very little power for the money spent.
