I just bought my 2013 G37S Sedan. Seeing this thread is not surprising. I had a 2003 Nissan Altima 3.5SE. I had the same oil consumption problem with that car as well. I was hoping that this would not happen to my new car.

Now I am wondering if this will reoccur with my G37. Any update to this? Does anyone know if this applies to the more recent G's?

 

As far as I know, it was only with the 2005-6 rev-up motors. Now all manufacturers have lemon motors now and then. Personally, I don't know how they can guarantee any motor that they don't do all the maintenance on.

 

Some 07+s have this issue as well. There was a topic on this is the VQ36 forum. Mine has had an issue twice with this.

 

And there has been a few cases with the DE as well.

 

My 04 is experiencing this

 

A on my exp. I was using Mobile 1 synthetic. To wrk with new drect inj motors and standards they changed the formla. I started eating a quart each 1000 miles. and oil consumption was started by the dealer with regular 5w30 even thiough i said synthetic but nowadays it doesnt matter it did back in the day but let them know they failed. I drove on this oil and No consumption really. Heres the kicker. OEM says to use 5w30(per the temps my car is exposed to) regular and not synthetic which started to make sense why the slight rod knock i was getting went away and no more oil consumption. I let them know what the situation and we redid it with synthetic.

Quality gaurd (ext warranty most nissan and infiniti dealer sells you) DOES NOT cover the repair if you have oil consumption. So i said what abiout the noise again DOES NOT cover if there is no metal in the oil even if noise is heard. Most ext warranties are like this now so be careful.

I tried castrol edge synthetic and still ate oil but little less than mobile 1.

Now I run reg. castrol 5w30 past 3 oil changes no more knock and car runs great no oil consumption at all. I have an 06 sport package with the vq35de.

As a person that has been a technician for 8 years I am suprised about this outcome and cant really explain it. I did notice that synthetic seems to pour out the drain plug thinner than reg oil even though both are 5w30. Maybe if i went 5w40 on synthetic it wouldnt eat oil idk but after doing a lot of research online and talking to some reputable technicians and looking over the manual with them i does not say to use synthetic what so ever and the rec. oil change intervals are just like all the cheaper every day cars like all the nissans etc,.

The ones that started to use synthetic is the vq37hr and the vq35's in maximas around the same years that needed that special ester oil synthetic to keep from timing noises or something its been a few years since i read the bulletin when i was a jouneyman at nissan a while back.

Sorry if any of my info is wrong or misleading feel free to correct me if I'm wrong with some proof.

 

Check my history...long story short my '04 had the engine replaced because of this oil consumption issue. Though this TSB sent to the dealers was addressed to 05-06 problems, they are flexible if you have excellent service records, etc.

I thought it was not good for an engine to switch back to regular oil once you've used synthetic....is that not true and only a myth?

Started up the G this past Saturday after sitting about a week. It made some real loud knocking-type noises at startup and later subsided down to this (video). I just want to make sure I'm not being paranoid and this is not the knocking sound of a engine with an OC issue. At 1st, I thought they could be the belts, but as I listened, I could hear the belts alone. This sound was something else. I've gotten the OC test done twice and of course, I pass with no issues found. Please check out the vid below and chime in please. Let me know your thoughts.

What type of fuel you are using?
87, 91 or 93 octane.

Back in the day it was bad from what I heard. But anything 90's up I can def. tell you is modern enough to not matter. I also seen people in those years do it with no problems. I personally say follow the owners manual which says nothing about synthetic for my 06 sport package.

 

I still remember the first time I used Amzoil. It was in a Honda 550/4 motorcycle I (wish I still) had. It had NO oil leaks and no consumption problems. I filled it with the Amzoil (which was as clear as water BTW) and within a week, there was oil RUNNING out of every gasket on that bike. I changed back and it quit.

Same for my Sons Jeep, he tried M1 and it drank oil like a fish. Went back to dino oil and never had a problem.

If you are running syn oil and are having OC problems, dino oil will SLOW it down, but not stop it.

 

So in my 05 sedan there seems to be an oil leak..
Occasionally? Its not every time I park, and the car is not running low on oil (although the dip stick is incredibly difficult to get an accurate read on) comments, suggestions?

 

I have 08 G35 with 80k miles on the clock and since I bought it (4 months ago), I didn't notice any oil consumption. I check it once a month and its still close to maximum level.
The car is up for service next month. Oil change, including transmission and diff. oil. The car has been serviced at the dealer so far and I reckon they used 5w30. I have to check because I live in a hot climate. The temperature is always over 50 F, and in summer it gets up to 110 F. Maybe they are using a different oil here and thats why it doesnt eat up the oil.
